When you say "I had to adjust the tightness of the screws" did you adjust actual screws that hold motor plate or one small screw in the middle of motor plate? That screw is the one you need to adjust in order to move motor closer to the bevel gear.
Take a look at this pic, see the screw in the middle? That's the one you have to play with.
