Another way to work it in yourself, is to a small knife (x-acto knives work) and scrape out a little mound of boot polish, then press it into the holes/nicks/cuts and work it in with a polishing cloth. If you want you can heat it up with a lighter to melt it into the hole better.
It doesn't work for all damage, but it's a start.
