I'd say that Spike's pretty much on the ball. SHS full-rack pistons are really sturdy, and Lonex is also an affordable high-quality internals manufacturer.
If the O-ring is worn out, yhere may be a loss of compression which is causing the large FPS variations. You may notice a slight FPS increase with a new piston, as well as significantly smaller variation. For example, my LCT AK only varies by ±5 FPS on the chrono.
And yes, all AR platforms use a V2 gearbox so you should be fine.
