I've seen it myself several times.
Knowing your gun can increase accuracy as well, especially in airsoft. Each gun has it's own quirks and feel, but once you're used to shooting it, your general skill improves. So technically a mediocre shooter with a bad gun, will eventually maximize the guns effectiveness by way of understanding its behavior; this is truer in aorsoft in my opinion.
With all that said though, there is 'never' a time where it isn't superior to have a the best possible tool(s) for a job.
