I have an airbrush that i just use. hvlp would be a nice upgrade.

Prep work...
I sand anything to bare metal then paint a thin coat of primer. then next day i put 1 or two layers of paint on.

I've been using Krylon but it's pure garbage. So moved onto Rustoleum but again it gets really flaky and too grainy.

Any suggestions on how to bake a steel (or aluminum slide) receiver?
