When using a blade of that style, training I've recieved indicates that you would hold it blade up to you and use it in a "gutting" manner, it's a very simple concept and requires very little training to use a blade in that manner, keeping in mind how quickly the people issued that knife where "trained".

Many confederate knives from the civil war tend to confuse people not familiar with that concept.

Stab in and yank up, whole bunch of nasty damage is done. Bayonets can be used to slash, but are primarily designed for thrusting, so it makes sense to use it in the manner I mentioned if it's not fixed to your weapon.

That said, most troops seem to ditch them from what I can tell.
