That spring is what holds your safety and slide lock in place. Without it, your safety will move around and it will keep turning the safety on, disengaging the trigger group..

Also, this spring is needed to keep for your slide lock to function. Without it, the slide lock will just float around and won't lock your hop up unit. It NEEDS to stick out because the slide lock needs to be able to lock your slide so that when the gun cycles, the slide won't fall off.

You can take it off. It's held in by a pin (it's the first hole to the left). Push the pin out and the spring just falls out. But I wouldn't recommend it though....
