Glad to hear that it's narrowed down a bit...best of luck.
Although I don't think it's usually much of an issue with the KJW 226 you might want to take your mag catch out and look at it. If the corner that holds the magazine is worn (the plastic ones used to wear on glocks/etc...) then it'll let the magazines slip a bit and sit lower.
Other than fiddling with the mags or the height of the BBU you can't fix much else with this issue. If the shims don't work (or create other cycling issues) then ditch the pistol and get another.
If you're stuck on a 226 the TM 226 is just awesome (all plastic though) and the KWA 226 is very, very nice. A TM 226 in a guarder frame/slide kit is very nice. The WE (Socom?) 226 is very pretty and feels like a nice build...hopup shoots like crap though.
