$300 overkill? Lol, you haven't been in airsoft very long have ya mate. So then what about $400+ on an EOTECH scope, or $200+ on a Magpul M4 stock?? You think it was over kill to spend $400 on a Callahan/Hellcat plate carrier chest rig too? It's all in the eye (and bank roll) of the beholder my friend.

I'm sure most things in airsoft are overkill for a 14yr old's allowance....not even sure why a 14yr old is playing airsoft, but that's a whole other dicsussion.

You are correct in that it is whatever works best for you. I've gone down the road of FRS, boom mics and cheap throat mics. Was an exercise in wasted money. UHF opened up a crystal clear world of comms and quality accessories that does make a huge difference, not to mention the added range of UHF or GMRS.

Most new players will start out with the "less expensive" route and go with FRS, which is a good place to start. But as your playing expecience grows, you might find there is a need to imporve on your comms gear, especially if you play on much larger fields where the small range of the FRS may not work too well. Guys like Illusion and Batman have been playing for many, many years and know what they are talking about. I think Bats has tried damn near every type of comms gear available at one point or another.

When you put it that way, i guess $300 for a comm setup isn't bad (and jsut for the record, i don't think spending $400 on a Callahan is overkill at all)

I've been playing airsoft for about 2 years now and i wouldn't call that long, but it's long enough for me to get a good perspective of what is and isn't overkill. But you've certainly cleared it up a bit more for me by comparing the prices of comm equipment to tactical gear (which i should have thought of before posting). As for the 14 year old playing airsoft part, things are done differently here in the US and i don't get allowance. I work for my money. Having my parents give me money to spend on airsoft and other things is wrong IMO. They give me food and shelter, and that is plenty. The least i can do is pay for my own hobby.
