For protecting your AEG I'd recommend a hardcase hands down. I'm using a Gunguard for my SR16 and theres plenty of room for pistols, extra mags and any accessories you might have. I guess the only complaint I have is that it is a little bulky (not surprising since it was designed to accomodate two hunting rifles).
As for soft cases, when I first started airsoft I actually used my old paintball softcase to carry around my MP5A4. As long as you exercise a little caution it should be fine, and I have to admit it was easier to carry around since I could just sling it across my back.
