How long has he had the gun (how many BB's have gone through it)?
I take it that it still has the max spring in it and not the replacement as you said he has never opened it.
Does the pistol grip get hot?
I have seen some motors act like this when they are on the way out and will work for small periods of time then just stop and over heat.
Check the motor connectors and then maybe try a different motor if you have one laying around.
Keep in mind those MAX series guns come with a hard spring (I have seen chrono results from a few guns from 460fps - 507fps), the stock internals and motors aren't made to pull those springs but more to just shoot and get it across Customs.
So while you are at it you might want to downgrade the spring (that and you will prob be to hot for most fields anyway)
