Well if you insist it's not the gears but you smack the grip and it clears the lock up, I can't see why it can't be the motor height. Just try backing out the motor by quarter turns and see. Mark the starting point so you can go back if I'm wrong, or get your hands on a known working short motor.

btw, if this has been an issue since day one, I'm assuming you tried contacting the previous owner or vendor?
