I cannot remember for sure...but I think some came out clockwise and others counter clockwise. The last one I saw was definitely counter clockwise.
I also remember that it basically took Level 12 Hulk force to get it off too. Propane blowtorch and heating it up hot enough so that it'll burn your skin badly might kill whatever threadloc (almost krazy glue) is in there.
If you're going to cut it off...use a dremel cut off wheel...careful not to nick the barrel itself. go into the threads a bit and then heat/crank it off with pliers. clean up the threads afterwards.
