FRS/GMRS radios also work great for comms. Cheaper and don't rely on cell towers to communicate.
Regardless, leaving it in the car is not an option and you would need one hell of a long game to drain 100% charged phone. I only paid $76 for my iPhone 3GS, but replacement value is $699
