think of the spring loaded piston as a little hammer.Each time you dry fire you're hitting the frame of your gearbox with this hammer . eventualy the metal will fatigue and fail. This is especially prevailent in the design of a non re-enforced version 2 gearbox.

The walls of the gb, around the cylinder, are to thin for a such a high stress point. Most newer V2 gear boxes address this problem are not prone to cracks. (still not as robust as any of the other versions, but better than the origional)
