Having a BB in the barrel causes backpressure on the piston and reduces impact load on the mechbox. A few dry firing rounds at the end of a magazine isn't going to kill your gun, neither is a couple of shots in semi at the end of a game to make sure the spring is decompressed. However, repeated dry firing for no reason can lead to failure of parts, such as the mechbox (especially V2 mechboxes) and cylinder heads.
