Okay, I just tested it with IE6 and I do see it (although it doesn't show up in Firefox on the same machine)
Anyone not seeing it (Firefox, etc) try copying the address and pasting it in Notepad: the square in question will magically appear.
Dunno what the deal with that is; ask whomever to resend the email address properly.
