so it sounds like you've stripped a piston.
When the motor is off of the bevel gear, you'll hear a quiet "whir" because there is no load and only the motor is spinning.
As you tighten the adjustment screw the pinion gear will start to make contact and a more audible grinding noise will happen but it's not enough contact to start cycling the piston.
Tighten further and the rest of the gears (spur and sector) will spin cycling the piston, tappet etc.
Tighten even furthur and you'll have jammed the motor too far up and it won't spin at all giving you a high pitched squeel.
It sounds like the gears are spinning but, because there are no teeth on the piston (or one of the gears but it's more likely the piston)all you hear is the "whir" and no cycling. Don't be too bummed out it'll happen to the best of them and the part is only about 15 bucks.
