I run deans in my Famas, never had a problem. If you have an ohmmeter or continuity checker, use it. If deans are wired lazily, its very possible to create a short.
Deans are actually a great connector, im switching over to them for all my guns.
The white connectors you talk about are Tamiya. they come in large and mini.
Oh, BTW, if you are using that charger you have linked..... thats your problem there.
