Motor to gear ratio...
 

OK, I have an idea for a future set up and I am just wondering if I am over looking something. I am sorry if this idea has been thrown around before. I didn't see it anywhere.

(for the purposes of this discussion brands will be left off. Insert your favorite brand when you think about this.)
Here we go:
High quality reinforced 7mm bushing v3 gearbox
M110-120 spring (shooting for 400-420fps)
Steel bearing spring guide
POM or polycarb piston and head w/ bearings
Steel high speed gear set
High torque motor
8.4v 3600mAh (possibly 9.6v) battery
The rest is inconsequential

What I am thinking is m120 spring slows down ROF, high speed gears increase ROF, so the equalize. This setup would over burden a standard motor, so that is equalized by a high torque motor. The rest is just built to endure the strain.
Is it feasible?

No, either choose high FPS or high speed. Don't combine parts that aren't meant to go together.

Modify SMOOTH High torque gear set and a Magnum.

Everything else? Modify where you can get it, IMO the best parts you can get

I do understand that they are not made to work together. What I am asking is if it's possible, or why not. I am already aware that airsoft dogma says this is a no-no.

It is said that an m110 or m120 (depending on who you ask) is the upper threshold for high speed sets and the lower threshold for high torque sets. What actual problem might this set-up cause?

Isn't the magnum meant for higher strength batteries, like a 10.8v or a lipo, 9.6v nimh at the bare minimum?
What I am really trying to accomplish is a mid/high level fps (400-450) without compromising a good ROF, all out of an 8.4 large type.

Good strong motor (i.e. G&P M120 or M140...Guarder Infinite Torque Up...Magnum, but it's pricey) and Torque Up Gears (don't need Super Torque Ups). You don't want high speed gears in there.

If it's the AEG you talked to me about....don't change the gears or the stock motor. With a M110 and the stock motor it's buttery smooth. With a M120 it's a little slower, but hardly an issue (probably more realistic if anything).

There's a good write up on Airsoftmechanics about calc'ing out RPS by gear ratios and motor RPMs. There's also a listing of the gear ratios somewhere (look at RiotRc's thread).

Anyway, Won't a set up with high torque motor and gears be sluggish without a 9.6+ battery to back it all up. I would assume this to be the case due to the combination of a slightly under powered motor (due to battery) and a slower ratio gear set.

Get double torque gears, torque motor, and a big battery
Like a 9.6v large elite 5000mah
You get a high rate of fire without having a STUPID high rate of fire. And get a triggermaster too so you can reduce the ROF if you want ;)

I'd be careful with both a bearing spring guide AND a bearing piston head. A lot of the issues I've seen with pistons is a result of 2 bearings over compressing the spring (the spring is fully compressed without the piston being all the way to the rear, the result is stripped pistons) because of the extra room taken up by the bearings. You only need bearings on one end - preferably on the spring guide, as this means less mass in the piston, and therefore greater ROF.

Otherwise, as TC said, torque gears, good motor, and good battery + trigger master = win.
