Wiring LEDs directly into AEG battery line?
 

Would it be possible or even advisable to try something like buying some super bright LEDs like Luxeons and wire them directly into your wiring harness? Basically, I'm trying to come up with a solution that doesn't require an add-on tracer silencer and I have plenty of room above my magwell around where the bb loads into the nozzle. Would it be possible to hook up a few LEDs directly into the wiring so they are powered by your AEG battery and because they are also connected straight to your mechbox, they only light when you press the trigger so it's timed perfectly with your tracer bbs being shot? Also, there would be plenty of juice since it feeds off your primary battery and wouldn't require external AAs, etc.

The tracer mags don't work because the light is inside the mag and by the time your bbs load up the feeding tube into the nozzle/hop-up area, they are too far from the lightsource and are already fading unless you are firing on full auto.

Unless you have a clear hopup I'm not sure how the lights going to get to the BB in the way you describe this.

As for current, several LED's wouldn't hurt your AEG itself, but you'd want to make sure you are using adequate wiring for both voltage and amperage to both the motor and this LED system.

There's a whole How-To Hopup Tracer in Arnies (I think). They had a huge night game where tracers were mandatory, lots of guys were modding their hopup...don't know how it went. Or maybe airsoftmechanics.com (I think that's where I found the thread, Killbuckets thread, that linked to another writeup). Might have been one of the airsoft forums in the US though.

Doesn't have to be clear...they drilled holes in the hopup unit. Step by step instructions, photos and very clear descriptions. Complete with wiring right to your battery pack or to an alternate power source.

I'll take a peek and see if I can find it again.

This is mentioned elsewhere in those links but it bears repeating - use UV leds to light up tracer BBs. The big bright Luxeons are great but the smaller UV leds work really (and just as) well while being smaller and lower power. I would recommend them instead.

Easy source (other than an electronics place) is a "counterfeit money detector" at the dollar store. If they have them. It's just a UV LED keychain light.


EDIT: Here is a link to my LED-in-parallel-to-motor muzzle flash mod. It only lights while the motor is running, so if the light were shining into the chamber/breech it would basically be an internal tracer unit instead of a muzzle flash. You're on your own for making that part work though ;)

Thanks, that's fantastic. I saw some orange tracers fired in a basement the other day and I thought they looked amazing, looked like phosphorus rounds (instead of green which seems artificial). It would be fantastic if we could get the kind of organization here in Canada for a tracer-required game. Everybody firing them would look great (whereas, if you are the one guy with tracers at a night game, you just give away your position more easily).

I have a G36 and there are some good spaces around the nozzle between the mechbox and hop-up unit.
