Same thing as half painted ass job camo's? Where do you guys come up with this stuff... all the pictures of soldiers in Iraq ether have black guns or tan painted gun with little wear on them. And i have yet to see soldiers in Iraq with magpuls or tape/ropes...

So i'm probably missing something here... pictures please :)

Just to clarify here - Are you talking about real steel 30rnd AR mags or airsoft AR mags? The older version of the phantom pouches had the removeable / adjustable pouch flap. The newer versions do not. Since real steel AR mags are about an inch longer, it's a close fit with magpulls in the newer phantom pouches.

I thought the purpose of the magpul was to potrude up and out for quick access. Should'nt it be a plus in that case if they are to long? Or is that too long? I have never atuly used any so just checking. I somehow forgot to purchase magpuls, will be shortly.:)

They are used for a few things, depending on what kind you use.
Standard magpuls are for easier mag access, especially in double mag pouches.
L-plates, are designed to absorb fall damage. So if you drop your magazine on a concrete floor it wont dent, you can also tether it.
Ranger plates are designed for easier extraction from pouches, I find they work better in triple mag pouches than doubles. They don't take up any extra room like standard magpuls, and are ergonomically designed. You can also run tethers on these too.

Magpuls are a User Choice Feature. Yeah in the old days we went with 550 cord loops and 100 mph tape, but thats what drove the train to develop mag-puls in the first place.

I prefer Ranger Plates, Doesnt add anything to the widht of the mag, just the height.

Most good pouches will accept mags with Ranger Plates or the slip on Magpuls.

Once again, its something you have to try, train with, get proficient with to see if its right for you.

I can post pics of either if needed.

Other guys, who almost definitely know more about this than me, have already posted, but I'll throw in my $0.02, just because I was messing with my gear last night and it's fresh in mind.

In the Pantac (aka Phantom) double M4 pouches that I have, and with the TM/CA M4 magazines and magpuls (the rubber slip over design), here's what I find.

Having both mags with magpuls in a double pouch is too tight, width-wise (from your body to away from your body). The extra width that the slip ons take up kind of jams them in the pouch. If the one you grab is the one stuck "under" the other mag, I tend to find that the insert of the metal mag get's pulled out (don't know why...but it sucks). Maybe other types of pouches don't have this problem...don't know.

If I put one mag with a magpul and one that just has a paracord loop (I took off the floor plate of the mag, put a loop with a knot in either end and trapped it under the floor plate), things work just fine. And the rubber loop has saved more than one of my mags from some pretty nasty drops onto the concrete floor.

Anyways...do they work for me? Yes. Do the work in Phantom double pouches? Yes, but with reservations.

Hope that helps....
