M14 or Thompson?
 

Hey Guys, Evo Again.

Ive read many reviews on the TM M14 and the TM Thompson, im just looking for pros and cons from whoever has handled one on this board. I am pretty indecisive as I like both. Any of your Opinions would be a great help.

if your playing outdoor/long engagement M14 is the clear choice. If you plan on short engagments thompson is not bad. But for accuracy the M14 is the gun. I will admit the thompson has a great rate of fire and is a very nimble gun. The 14's length and weight are some what hard to get use to but once you do it is an amazing feild gun.

The stock is reeeeeeally long on that puppy. Just throwing that out there... I love it but it might be awkward for some. Just a little something to keep in mind.

M14 all the way. Aside from looking really out of place at any modern scenario, the M1 is an obsolete airsoft rifle in comparison to the M14. So many advances were made in mechbox design between the release of the two, and the M14 is arguably TM's best product to date (apologies to P226 fans)

Both are dead sexy guns, I'd love to have both, but if I only had the choice of getting one, I'd get the M14 hands down. Besides, it's easier to get mags, pouches and accessories for.

Agreed, although I'd still trade my M14 for a Thompson.

The thompson uses the ver.6 mechbox though, as far as I know the strongest mechbox design there is. The most popular mechbox design is still by and far the ver.2 which is fundamentally flawed but because its in the M4/16 series and MP5 series everyone uses em. So really the advancements between the ver.6 in the thompson and the ver.7 in the M14 are very few. Heck the P90 has the most efficient hopup design ever made and its a ver.6 too.

As for the thompson vs. M14 thing...you rarely see a thompson at any game, you see lots of M14's around, its for a reason. I am dying to get my M14 up and running so I can start using it (wiring problem, motor heats up like crazy when the battery is plugged in even when not firing) but its on a waiting list with the local gun doc :(

Just figured I'd chime in and say that I LOVE my M14 Socom. Even stock it's got amazing range. It has better long range accuracy at 290 fps than most guns with 350+. A fact that we discovered while prepping a dozen or so different hop-ups for a game. Granted it was the longest barreled gun we tested but nothing else could touch it in terms of getting the BB out there with minimal swerving. Other harder shotting guns could hit the target (and hit it harder too) but NOT without compensating for the distance to such an extent that the first few shots were alwats wasted.

It performs so well stock that I've had a new Spring, bushings, Spring guide, and steel gears sitting on my desk for who knows how long. If it ain't broke don't fix it I say.

Realisticly though, they're both TMs, both newer mechboxs. Ergonomics and personal taste will probably be your main criteria.

I'm greatly intersted in the M14, but I'm wondering if its better to go with TM or CA? I'm noticing that the TM is 100 bucks more yet the CA has more real steel parts. Just onwdering on any opinions out there?

don't forget the G&G m14... it comes with real wood furniture lol

when it comes to upgrade ability. the M14 would win the M1 as metal bodies and wood stock and grips the M14 as a long list of parts.

The CA M14 has no real steel parts. Real steel refers to a real M14 that fires 7.62x51mm/.308 rounds, not 6mm BB's. TM, CA, and G&G are all "full metal" AEG's in that everything that is metal (steel) on the real steel M14 is metal (usually potmetal) on the airsoft version.

TM are known rock solid guns, G&G have a mechbox like a brick and are known for crappy shimming and lube out of the box so they need to be redone, and CA are supposedly a hybrid of the two, might be a good middle ground but there aren't that many reviews yet since their still fairly new. A team mate of mine has been using a stock first gen G&G M14 (not relubed/shimmed yet) and the accuracy and range is incredibly. At 320-330fps he can outrange an M16/AK/G36/etc. shooting 400fps even if they have a similar barrel length. I also have a G&G M14 but because of said wiring problem I haven't used it yet.

There are some other difference. TM M14 has a 480mm barrel I believe, G&G is 520mm and its a 6.04mm tightbore out of the box. G&G can take mostly ver.2/3 internal parts but have a couple proprietary, TM have all ver.7 specific parts but there are far more aftermarket parts and accessories for them.

I haven't handled an M14 so I can't comment on it, but personally I found the Thompson to be incredebly uncomfortable to shoulder. I would recommend you find someone who owns one and see how it feels before making a decision.

It just takes some getting used to. Also, the Tommy has a wicked rate of fire, and is made of metal, so you can bash that sucker!
