Maruzen M870 vs. Tanaka M870(gas)
 

Im planning on purchasing one of either of the aforementioned shotguns.


My question is directed more at people who know first hand, but any feel free to chime in - Which has better build quality? Any noticable differences?

I have two Maruzen M870's (and an M1100) and have used the tanaka trencher (same internals).

Tough call... but the Tanaka would win just because its newer and full metal. Only 3bbs per shell though. The Maruzens you can pack with up to 10 but the gun is a big finnicky.

Remeber Airsoft Surgeon/Redwolf's Tanaka M870 slug shot? I wonder if you could fire BBs with wadding from that... It would probably hold more than the Maruzen shells can (10).

I have an M1100 revision. I find that the biggest problem is that BBs get dislodged from the shells during operation, but this wouldn't be a problem with the M870, since you can ease up on the pump action to reduce the problem. I believe the M870 can take green/propane with a hose replacement, but don't quote me on that.

If firing BBs from the Tanaka custom slug shot shells works, I'd definitely get that. Better build quality, more realistic action, etc.

well, i wouldnt want to bodge a slug shot with wadding and X bbs, id want to do it the way it was meant, just not adventurous to find out:P

ive read so far on here that the maruzen shells holding 6-7 operate well enough as a scatter(better than 10 at least) and can handle propane fine.

Have you heard somewhere that the maruzen/tanaka m870 cant take propane?

itd be nice to get the airsoft surgeons shotguns, but theyre far too expensive for me to get:(

really just tanaka or maruzen at this point. and im not looking for a 1100, simply because i want to be able to cock it

I own a full metal Maruzen CA870 Charger with G&P long barrel kit and otherwise stock internals (320 FPS). Since it only shoots 1 bb per pump, it's actually more like a pump-action sniper rifle than a shotgun. I play with it against AEG's for shits and giggles, but it's a great gun.....just not very shotgun-like. With .25's it's wicked accurate when you get the hopup dialed in perfect, and I can get more range than a stock VSR10.

friend of mine is a machinist..he made his own metal outer barrel and other interesting things for his ca870...badass gun youre right

judging by pics alone, the tanaka looks to have better plastics than the maruzen (compare plastic butt stocks and pump grips from various retailers). I was surprised that an unloaded tanaka m870 weighs more than an ics mp5 a4 with a large 8.4v batt. and it is a very noticable weight difference.
Also, it looks to me that slugshot shells may be able to be fired from a standard m870 with some minor mods (remove inner barrel assembly, mod that ring thingy at the front of the mag tube...) although that is not confirmed.

I would go for the tanaka as as it is that bit more powerful and more reliable on propane, plus it has character. what other airsoft gun has accesories with names like super magnum

but think of the possibilities with maruzen's 1-10 bb shells...that alone is what is practically selling me. 3 is pretty sad imo

The quality of the maruzen firing 10bb's at once though is somewhat to the same description.. pretty sad. Seems like it works out best with limited numbers like 3-4

Also, soon after buying your going to be looking for a brass catcher. The cool pump-action element gets pretty watered-down during games worrying about keeping track of your shells.

I found the shell cycle operation is the height of the gun. It's the firing part that brings down its value.
I'm not sure but I almost remember the use of hoses in the gas system, which seemed somewhat unreliable. Like, clear food-grade tubing.

Althought it does well in any collection. I would seriously consider the Tanaka.

thanks yep, i have a shell catcher bag in mind for theside of the gun - that's no biggy

ive had numerous TM shotties and as fun as they were, i need something more dynamic than a spring aeg with essentially "burst" fire. pity the 10 bb shotgun doesnt deliver

What people need to remember is the the Clarence Lai "Super Magnum" 870 shells for the Tanaka hold ONE (1) BB. That's 1 bb doing 450 fps on green...no good for CQB, where this weapon *should* be a monster....

You'd be better off getting the CL-tuned Tanaka M870 and his upgraded shells from Redwolf if you're looking for the "scatter effect" of a shotgun.

there are clarence lai made-for-tanaka scatter shells? im sold if the tanaka can use a greater number scatter shot, otherwise, man im on the fence.

Whoops. Looks like I had some conflicting info.

The CL "Super Magnum" shells only hold 1 bb and shoot 450 on propane.

The regular shells are exactly the same as the Winchester shells, which hold 3 bb's and shoot 350 on propane.

dohh, well i think im going to get the maruzen m870, simply because it's for uber CQB and if the bbs drop off after 30 feet,10 bbs, with a 3 foot spread,(to quote numerous sources) that's all i need. And if it breaks...ill get one of the other shotguns:P
