M1A1 Thompson

Just bought a new TM M1A1, took it out of the box, installed a battery and it didn't work properly. The video shows what I mean, anyone ever had this problem or know what it might be? I have contacted the seller but he seems to be giving me the cold shoulder for now. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

NIB? Betcha your battery isn't charged or is otherwise damaged, as a TM bad out of the box is almost unheard of. If, for some reason, it IS a problem with the gun, it's something to do with the electrical system. Check all the relevant connections.

It has to be the switch. My M4 was doing something similar to that. I took the gun apart then put it back together and it works like a charm now. It was kind of odd.

I should have stated that the battery was fully charged. I have checked the connections in the stock and the fuse, everything seems fine. Anyone have any experience taking one of these apart? I have upgraded my M16A2 with various mechbox items, this can't be any harder can it? I'm think maybe along the lines of the selector plate?

Update

I disassembled my M1A1 to find out the problem with it. The switch assembly was burnt bad enough that it wouldn't make contact when the trigger was pulled. I cleaned the conections and it is working for now. I will need a new switch though. Thanks to everyone that offered help, especially Erik_James who offered to "walk me through" the project, almost needed to PM you, but I figured it out.

Here are some pics of the burnt switch

You don't need to replace the switch. Just sand down or file the contacts with a small needle file (available for pennies at a Princess Auto or other like store). I do it all the time and works just fine and be as good as new.

Remember to keep any grease from getting on those contacts. That's probably what caused that level of arcing in the first place.

It'll save you from spending $50 or more (most likely) on switch.

You're right, the contacts were covered in grease. Wiped them clean and did use emry cloth to clean them up. Maybe it'll be fine.

While you're at it, also look at the selector plate and makes sure that the contacts there are clean and especially look at the contact plate for the selector. There has been some issues with Marui selectors where the plate is "press" fit. It can leave behind plastic burrs which can actually move one of the switch contacts (usually the lower one) out of the way during mode changes and render the gun unable to fire.

Just a suggestion since you already have the mechbox apart. Just take your emery cloth and sand away any burrs if they're present and save yourself a future headache.

You'll need to be 18+ and age verified for anyone to hand out that information.
