noob question about buffer tubes

I have a m4 stock adapter. the adapter doesn't specify if it's for mil spec or commercial spec so how do I know which buffer tube to buy? are AR buffer tubes just generically the same?

I took the adapter to Cabela's and the guy tested it and the buffer tube on the AR fit on the adapter. so how do I go about choosing a buffer tube as above?

Milspec are a lot thinner and has a flat profile on the end cap while the commercial tunes are fatter in diameter and has angled end cap

when I read online, it seems that tube spec is only for the stock, not to go in the adapter. I'm just confused since the spec is for the thread length/diameter.

Did the guy not say what the tube was? Did you ask? Because obviously if that tube fit on the adapter then that's the one you'll want to buy.

Just buy the stock that you want, it should be labeled commercial or milspec then you need to buy a corresponding tube, the thread pitch is universal on both, otherwise ar15 owners will pissed if it wasn't

The guy just said it was a standard tube. FYI after research, both commercial and mil spec tubes will fit in any M4 adapters or AR lowers. The comm/mil spec only applies to the stock-tube fit.

Both tubes are threaded the same and fit in the same receivers. Mil-Spec threading protrudes while commercial threading is cut out. Because of this, mil-spec tubes have a smaller diametre than commercial tubes, affecting stock fitment.
