World best combat BDU !

I’d like to make a review of what is, in my opinion, the best combat BDU ever made.
Before this one, my favourite combat jacket was the British smock for its pocket capacity and its heavy material for comfort and protection.
So let me present you the Swiss BDU!

The jacket is made of very comfortable heavy cotton (twice thicker as the British). It has 10 pockets: 2 on the chest with separation for magazines (6 mags), 2 cargos pockets, 3 pouches in the back (3 l mini each), one arm pocket, 2 inside pocket. To give you an idea of the capacity, I have an original Rhodesian LBV for my survival gear (3 days of food, water, shelter, first aid, radio, gps compass, shotgun ammo…) and everything fits easily just in the jacket !!.
Included a big adjustable hood (to wear with/without helmet) and in the hood : a sniper veil !!
Elbows are protected by thick cotton + waterproof plastic.

The jacket included also a “backpack” aprox 20 l that can be fixed on the jacket. Empty it fits any of the cargo pockets.

Same with the pants: 5 pockets, 2 cargo pockets with separation for 6 mags, clever sling and pressure system to tight everything around your legs. Knees protection by cotton and plastic.
Integrated suspenders and slings for weight repartition between the jacket and trousers.

So, everything’s perfect ? Too bad but no…As a fact, if the BDU designer is now a hero and you can find is statue in all Swiss military bases, the guy in charge of the camo pattern is still missing and a lot of bad stories run about him and what they did with his body…

If you do not know why have a look at that:

I never saw something uglier than this, it’s a criminal offence!

I solve this problem with dark OD dye and I’m quite happy with the result. I tried it this weekend and I was surprise by the result even without any leaf on trees and snow on the ground: several players walked less than 10 m from me and did not see a thing!

For my personal taste, it’s still too green so I’m going to try a brown dye sooner.

So I’m amazed by this set and it’s now my official clothes to go in the bush.

The good news are I’ve 2 and maybe 3 more set of this BDU (still red) and I can sell (trade preferred) them for a really decent price (usual price on the internet : 45 US$ for the pants  ). They fit small to regular. A perfect choice if you don’t have an assault vest yet.
Thanks for reading !

the swiss do make good shit (if their watches are any indication). too bad though they don't have a "real" army to use it.

some guys around here used an alpine version of that camo. pretty effective in fall/winter, but stands out like acu in summer.

My M4 is down :rrr: :rrr: so PDW for this weekend :-( Good thing about this chest-rig : fits 4 MP5 mags in each pocket !!

mcguyver November 21st, 2005 00:46

those pouches will hold 34 mp5 mags. nothing better for $50. or you can buy BHI and hold 12 mags for $300.

Nice job Frag, I can't even see you in the pics, are you hiding behind the guy in the green?

I didn't realize how decked out those BDUs are. Nice review and look forward to seeing them at the next game. Nice MP5 too.

edit
has anyone ever said that you look like Aragorn from Lord of the Rings...the first picture has me convinced.

Nah, I'd rather the TT route. ;)

This pattern is based partially on the late WW2 German camo called 'Leibermuster', as illustrated here: http://wilk.wpk.p.lodz.pl/~whatfor/leibermuster.htm

Anyway, I was curious as to how it was dyed and if any precautions were taken to prevent colour run in case it's worn in the rain.

frag7 November 21st, 2005 21:06

To dye it I first tried like it was writting on the box :1 box of dye for 10 mn in very hot water but it didn't worked at all :banghead: so I used 2 boxes for all night !! :-D :-D
I'm going to try now with a box of brown for some hours...we'll see...

No special precaution is after this : I was under rain with it and I still have my pink baby skin

But, as it's a heavy coton it takes 3 days to dry so after the last color test, I will apply a waterproff layer.

That looks awesome..I may have to try this with mine. Unique pattern after it is done for sure. So, 2 boxes of Rit dye (OD), soak overnight? How did it not turn the rest of the colors (like the white specks) to OD I wonder?

Scuba Steve November 23rd, 2005 19:57

Actually, anyone know where to buy this coat? I have just the rugular BDU jacket, not the sniper version like this one shown

gandar November 23rd, 2005 20:06

That's a damn nice piece of kit man.

lt_poncho November 23rd, 2005 21:29

Kick ass Frag - way to go. I really like the way you used the 3 color bottom to add to breaking up your pattern. By the time I spotted you coming out of the treeline in the pics you'd have capped a few of us.

Nice work - nice to see that the non digital stuff works well still (especially for the old skoolers hehehe)

Cheers!

Mmm, very nice indeed. Although you should try to get a tilly in that cammo rather then a faded tiger stripe. None the less, looks impressive for none digi.

ColtFarmer November 23rd, 2005 21:49

I have this jacket and pants set... maybe I will try the RIT dye fix for it... my plastic elbows are coming apart though =\
