SIG 551 stock splitting
 

I've got an ICS Sig 551 that has a plastic folding stock. The first time I took it out last summer I noticed that if I fold the stock the whole thing splits along the center seam both top and bottom when I unhook it from the rifle body. Basically I can lightly twist the stock side to side to expose the seam. The stock itself is still solid to the rifle body but I've tried sealing the gap with Krazy glue and recently with JB Weld and neither one worked so I'm up for suggestions for my next step.

Bondic, plastic welder. Its great stuff. make sure you sand the peices though to make it stick, I found the smooth plastics dont adhere well. worth a shot.

How well does the bondic work?

When I pick some up I'll let you know. The CT in my town is out of stock but the 2 stores in neighbouring towns have it, I'll have to wait until Monday or so to pick it up.

If it works as good as the youtube video, it'll go in my field repair bag ;)

it works great with plastics, but you must use it like welding steel. I've had good luck with it so far. I've drilled and tapped holes filled with it for stripped screws on an mp5 grip. You can build up layers at a time to any desired thickness. I've only had trouble with it sticking to smooth surfaces without sanding.

Update...

I picked up the Bondic today from CT ($18) and tried to seal the gap.

My first attempt was a bust, I tried to just use it on the seam but it didn't hold. I hooked the stock to the rifle body and then tried to bring it back but it split again. I think the bead was just too small to take the pressure.

My second attempt was to put a few small patches that overlapped the seam by a few mm on either side. I did this on both the top and bottom seams on the stock and it seems to be holding. I hooked the stock and brought back to the normal rifle position and it was holding. I'm planning on using it next weekend for a field skirmish and I'll see how it holds after a field trial ;)

One thing though because of the location I used it, it's right under my nose when I sight down the barrel and this stuff stinks. Hopefully the smell will decrease because it's not pleasant.

I can see it has it's uses so I would throw it in my field repair kit along with a small piece of sand paper to rough up the surfaces.

How would this compare to JB weld?

Well I tried JB weld on this and it failed worse than the Krazy glue. It wouldn't adhere to the plastic butt stock at all.

It's much cleaner to work with and the fact that it cures instantly with the light is a plus but I'll reserve judgement on it's strength until I take my rifle out for a game.

The Bondic unit comes in a small metal container that would fit easily in a utility pouch for field repairs.

Hmm the most interesting thing I'd like to know about is the strength. The videos I looked up online shows it can be used for flexible parts like eye glasses frames that go over the ear. I'd want to know how this material responds to stress e.g. shatter, warp, bends, etc. Would definitely look into this as a possible option to fix stuff in the future... plus I'm getting tired of JB weld and it's stupid setting times.

Like you I was impressed by the video but I'll hold judgement until it's been field tested.

I'll update this thread again after I've used my rifle in the field.

Sad to say but even with the Bondic, the stock split again when I took it to my local shop to get it chrono'd for an upcoming outdoor skirmish.

I think even with sanding my stock a bit (I didn't want to sand the crap out of it and uglyfy it) it didn't hold. I think the plastic is too smooth for it to properly hold on to. That being said I'll still keep it in my repair kit since it does bond quickly and depending on the surface it would hold in my opinion.

What he suggested was ordering a completely new stock to replace it, now I'm just trying to source it.
