[WIP] Building a new armor chassis

Hello folks,

A small thread because, as a couple of people here know, the OPS Modular Plate Carrier I've been using for live fire exercises is starting to fall apart after several years of good and loyal services, especially after a jackass forgot to do a chamber check before releasing the hammer and took out half my top left strap.

So I decided to not just buy a new one but actually make one to go with my new camo pattern, that is to say Kryptek Highlander.

To make this new armor chassis, if you're not familiar with the concept it's basically a plate carrier where the plates pouches are not in direct contact with the body but rather resting on a padded area to decrease trauma in case of hit and leave spaces for air to flow and limit perspiration, I'm basing myself on my fallen OPS and the Crye Cage Armor.

Original OPS Modular Plate Carrier :

I've added a few features to the design like side plate pockets integrated to cummerband, full molle on the shoulder straps, buckles for shoulder armor and padding held by velcro rather than behind part of the chassis (so you could change thickness or if damaged/dirty).
I'm also thinking of rotating the molle on the side panels 90° but I'd like to know if you people have things you'd like in a chassis.

As of now I've only just started sewing the front pocket with regular BDU fabric for testing shapes and assembly so you can go wild. If there are many people interested I may do an Indiegogo campaign or sell the ones I'll make out of excess fabric (Kryptek is only selling rolls of 10 yards).

I would not rotate the MOLLE on the side. You will be limited in the equipement fitting after. If you really need to rotate a pouch, there is some adaptors to do it.

I wouldn't rotate it either. And I wouldn't add useless weight (MOLLE on the shoulders... seriously what would you put there? Elastic, maybe, but not MOLLE).

Ninja_En_Short April 4th, 2013 20:22

Well the rotation I thought about it for having mag pouches facing the front to make extracting the mags easier.
I tried an adapter and even though the molle fixation made it a bit wobbly it was really a lot easier to take the 30rds AR15 mag out.

For the molle on the shoulder strap that's for having extra webbing for a surefire lamp, knife scabbard, ECM or communication equipment, etc.

For the shoulder armor I speak of this kind of things :

Not many use these (I don't either) but I like having the most options possible

Angled PALS works in certain situations, there is a reason that 90 degree and 45 degree PALS adapters exist for real world applications.

My suggestion to the OP, stick with regular PALS pattern. If the end user desires angled PALS channels, they'd be better off using the adapters. No sense in eliminating customer base because your product caters to needs that are too unique.

Actually I tried that loooooooooooong before the last Ghost Recon (which I seriously hated).
For the orientation I worked around it while watching a hedgehog. Basically there's the pouch itself presented as an opentop with bungie on which the user puts his choice of cover, basically a square of fabric with male velcro on one side and Molle on half the other. Rolled up like the hedgehog... I know that's a weird way to solve problem.

Be sure to upload some pics when finished, do you take requests? :D

I do take requests, that's the point of the thread :D

Use this

You should not put ammo on your sides. Even if rotated, the magpouch will be impossible to use because of the tickness of the rig and other pouches in front of the opening.

If you need more ammo than what fit on your front, I suggest you put some on your belt. Or maybe shoot less? (o:
I can fit 10 mags on my rig at the front andleft side. It's too much, but I can using shingles and doubles mag pouches on top.
I normaly carry 6 to 8 mags now on my rig and the rest goes in the backpack.

On my side I put a small IFAK, radio pouche and utility pouche depeding. If you run a pistol on your belt, you need to have the side of you rig clear for a good draw.

Already saw the AVS but I'm not a fan of that LEGO design. It's supposed to make things more customizable but the more I see them the more I feel every useful parts come as really pricey DLCs.
Plus the padding looks really anorexic.

For the ammo I actually put almost all of it on my belt already and only have one mag per pouch on the front just so I'm not getting uncomfortable when lying down (and I do that a lot) but some people put ammo on the side and I try to have something that fits most without having to play Megablocks with dozens of Playmobile parts.
Also I'm a DMR, the full auto on my 417 never saw the selector over him :D

Your a DMR? I know English isn't your first language but in the future. That's like saying a sniper rifle is a sniper. A DMR is a thing. You are a person.

Ok, I'll drop the regular joe and get pro (woohoo ! Rhymes achievement) : For a Designated Marksman who spends a decent amount on time on the ground I prefer to have a single row of mags on the front.
