British P37 Small Pack
 

If I am correct the WW2 British Small Pack can be attached to the P37 webbing belt or be worn on the back.

If the Small Pack is attached to the P37 webbing belt can it loop directly onto the belt or are some sort of buckles needed?

If the Small Pack is worn on the back I understand that a set of L Straps are needed to attach the pack to the webbing. Are any additional buckles needed?

I have been searching the internet for instructions on how the pack attaches to the P37 webbing in either configuration but I didn't find any. Does anyone know of such a link? I did find these websites (i.e. site1, site2) but I was hoping for more details.

After wearing this kit for several years I can not imagine any way it can comfortably be worn on the belt with any weight in it. I suppose you could use extension straps instead of the L straps on the top strap fittings but it wouldn't be very secure and would be a pain when you lay down since its so large for a belt piece.

I have not seen any buckles of any kind other than the L straps. The brass U located on the corner of the L hooks on the top of the Bren pouch if you can't tell from photos. Many bags do not have brass fittings on the bottom as they have been taken off at some point. For this reason it can be difficult to attach it to the back securely. I attach mine to the side fittings at the top instead. This is very snug and hard to get on/off but it works.

IIRC the wearing of the small pack on the left hip and the bayonet frog by the left breast was common with British Airborne soldiers. This allowed you to sit in a glider comfortably. The bayonet on the left breast was allegedly there so it wouldn't poke the glider fabric.

Small Pack is to be snug on the left hip. It is held there by attaching the Small Pack's side fittings to the X braces (aka p37 web suspenders).

Just to back up what shiftup says, I was at a military museum in Cobalt Ontario last week and saw it attached in that fashion. They had several manikins in the front loby showing diffrent uniforms and how they would be worn and that is how the airborne display was set up.

Any pictures on the hip set up? I am a bit curious on how it looks.

It attaches the same way the water bottle does on the right side. I remember doing this a few times but found it uncomfortable (when I was still skinny).
