Comparison of gearbox sound before and after gear set installation

Hey guys,

Over the last few weeks I've been using my PWS Diablo as a gearbox learning platform, replacing one part at a time, checking the results, taking it to games, trying to break it (i.e. seeing if my changes hold up to abuse), coming back afterwards and doing a post-mortem, tinkering more, wash, rinse, repeat. I'm trying to record video along the way to document my own learning and experimentation process.

In my last disassembly and reassembly, I replaced the stock G&G gears, 8mm metal bushings and shims with the Modify Smooth Modular gearset (torque) from airsoftparts. It was pretty easy to install. The gear set claims to be pre-shimmed with no play after installation, and after putting it in and installing the motor I confirmed that this seemed to be the case.

The stock shim job had a bit of play to it. From reading various threads here and elsewhere, I've noticed many people saying that imperfect shimming can lead to gear whine (ranging from minor to extreme). I was looking forward to verifying that myself, so I recorded a video before the install and after.

Here is the sound of the gearbox before the gearset installation:

As you can hear, the Modify pre-shimmed gearset indeed sounds a lot less whiny. I'll add that trigger response seems slightly improved, and in person the gun is a bit quieter now.

(Note: the first video is testing with 0.25g BBs and the second one with 0.20g BBs, the fps and RoF stayed roughly the same between both revisions of the build).

That is a dramatic change!

I don't know... they don't sound that different to me.. plus the second video has a suppressor.

Believe it or not, properly shimmed gears make a big difference.

Identical aside from the gear set. That would be the Diablo compensator you're seeing
