M4 gas block
 

i am here in the noob section cuz i dont have a clue in the world what to do. i am trying to get a set of folding sights for my M4, and i dont want the free float RIS to just fall off. does a gas block take the place of the standard front sight in holding the RIS in place? :? i tried looking around and got no info from any other sights, some help would be appreciated. thanks.

free float only makes contact with the receiver, not the barrel/gasblock, thats what makes it free float.

i should have specified. its just a regular JG metal front RIS system. dmy bad.

Any gas block for an M4 or like would work. It will press against the end cap for your RIS and keep everything from plopping off. Make sure you get a gas tube, rifles without look like poopiness.

The RIS is connected to the upper reciever, I forget the names of the parts involved but it doesn't matter.

The gas block (on a standard rifle, it's one with the triangular front sight) serves the purpose of re-directing gas to the BCG (Bolt Carrier group) due to the fact that a standard AR-15 system is a Direct Impingent system. That is, it's a type of gas operation for a firearm that directs gas from a fired cartridge directly to the bolt carrier or slide assembly to cycle the action. This does away with the need for a separate gas cylinder, piston, and operating rod assembly. The high-pressure gas acts directly upon the bolt and carrier and has the effects of saving weight, lowering costs, and reducing the mass of the operating parts.

The main disadvantage of this system is an increase of fouling in the breech.

None of this has any effect on an airsoft rifle however, it may just give you a better understanding of why the gas block is there, as it's NOT there to keep your RIS in place.

Gato: im not gun illiterate, i know how all that works, i have a ad on JG metal front rail. so if i take the standard triangle sight off, the rail system will just fall off. i wanted to know if a gas block would serve the same purpose as the sight did. good analogy tho.

which set of flip up sights would you recommend?

Then it's not free float and you're not, in fact, as gun "literate" as you'd like to think

As for the sights, out of those choices, the Troy, but personally, I'd get real ones.

i said gun illiterate. i know more about real guns than i do airsoft. my father collects military weapons, so i know a fair bit. im not a know it all by a long shot. in the description on the website, it says free float, so i was confused.
anywho, thanks for the advice, if i could find real sights within a 300 mile radius that didnt cost an arm and a leg, i would have them.

You can have real parts shipped, you know.

As for collecting military weapons, I do the same ;P

i know, just currently, these are a cheaper alternative.

any idea where i can get a metal upper receiver for M4 carbine, the one i got is just made out of plastic, i think its gonna break sometime soon.

Until you're age verified, you won't find many people who will provide that particular kind of info. It's a rules thing. So, if you're 18 or older, get verified, it's worth the time

Killbox - take some pictures, throw them up, and point out your issue. You're stating you have a free-floating RIS but it's falling off if you take the gas block off, which isn't making much sense. The only thing I can think of at this time is that your RIS isn't properly mounted at the receiver side.

Keep this in mind though. You may have to add or remove spacers on the delta ring to make your whole handguard assembly fit perfect. I had to use a friggin key ring:
