Whats Testing Waters?

what does it mean? i've seen it a bunch of times in the classifieds but i have no idea of what it means lol

CDN_Stalker August 26th, 2010 12:42

Means to see if there might be any interest in buying something.

TokyoSeven August 26th, 2010 12:43

Imagine dipping your toe in a bathtub to see how hot the water is.

Now think of the same concept but with throwing an item up for sale with a price to gauge how well it would fair.

Strelok August 26th, 2010 12:43

Basically gauging interest. I usually think of them as a "I'm thiiiinking of selling something, here it is.... But maybe not."

Correct me if I'm wrong.

theshaneler August 26th, 2010 12:43

People who might want to sell their stuff but only if the right offer comes along. Usualy this means the items are overpriced and not worth what the buyer is expecting, usualy but not always ;-)

ahh i see. thanks guys :) lol that was a quick response

lol!

Not always.

I put it in my ad because I wasn't sure which GBB I wanted to sell. The one that got more interest would sell, whilst the other would stay in the collection.

testing waters = for sale

Tex August 26th, 2010 15:00

testing waters should = post deletion it is for sale or it is not. If you cannot make up your mind or decide what you want or do not want don't post until you know.

/my 2cents

+1

It's for sale, or it's not. There's no halfassed in-between. Generally, when someone's ad in the classified says "testing waters", I take that to mean "not really interested or motivated to sell, but if you offer me a shitload of money I will consider it."

Tempest VI August 31st, 2010 14:05

Lol, were all "Testing Waters" then. If you could sell any gun or anything at a price way more than it's worth, I'd bet you would sell it. So... in that case I'm testing waters on my AUG... Anyone?

The Chad August 31st, 2010 14:15

It's not common enough to piss and moan about. I have seen it maybe 3 times in the past year. I can see why though, the seller does want to throw the bait out there but does not want to be committed to selling to any buyers.

I can see it being useful for items that are not so common in the sold archive or if the seller deleted the price. I use previous sold items to gauge my prices for items.
