We play airsoft because we can't afford paintball?
Just got a kick out of this video.
Most of you probably aren't aware, but in paintball big changes are starting to take place. The industry is trying to move to a smaller standard ball size. The reasoning being that due to the failing economy and great expense of paintball, buisness related to the sport have been suffering and failing. The answer lies in making the balls smaller, adding more value per shot through less waste and yada yada yada. But there are also some intersting comments regarding airsoft, along the lines of how we all secretly long to be paintballers but just can't afford it. Probably more true for the american airsoft kiddie market than here but funny none the less. YouTube - Richmond Italia on .50 Cal |
Bullshit.
The more milsim paintball evolve, the more it come closer to airsoft. The speedball thing is destined to remain a clown sport. |
Half of 3 million airsofters (using his figures) will switch to paintball? I somehow highly doubt that.
|
I'm curious about this, especially since I just got a DM9.
*hides in shame* |
hehe...to my recollection and personal knowledge....I know of Paintballers converting to Airsoft...but I do not know of any Airsofters converting ot Paintball? Reason...realism....have you noticed paintbal guns trying to look more like real steel....never going to happen unless they loose the air and go to a smaller caliber.....
|
i love how he thinks paintball is 100 percent better and airsoft only exists because its cheaper......
|

The paintball version always seemed shallow to me. |
lol Isn't airsoft more expensive than paintball
|
In Canada yeah, not really in the States and other countries not run by soccer mom antis.
|
how is changing the cal. size of paintballs going to make it cheaper for people? 68cal to 50 cal means all new barrels, guns, shoot even a new squeege to fit down your new tighter barrel. Its going to make the 68 cal stuff obsolete there for making it harder to sell that gear. Now you have to go buy new gear and have a 68cal dust collector.
.... cause you know the 8mm airsoft BB took off. |
Doesn't make much sense...although I will note that airsoft BB's are cheaper then paintballs...even though I can get pb markers for $100-/+ and the cheapest 'good' AEG still come over $300.
Still though, like Dart said, this is gonna suck for anyone who's already into the sport. New everything is gonna hurt their wallets more then buying paintballs and CO2. It'll be an easy change for people who don't have anything yet :p |
It's pretty much assured that the .50 cal revolution will fall flat on it's face. They tried it before, didn't work. It's basically one company (Smart Parts) trying to shove this down everyone's throat. No other manufacturer's are on board.
And the asshat in the video, is a royal douche, and a shitty salesman. True milsim is in airsoft, always will be. Paintball is there for some additional fun on the weekends. |
Seems to me that some 40 year old man wants those 16 year old kids with $20 to come get covered in his new special rainbow splooge...
|
If a smaller caliber paintball is the answer then why not go .40 cal, Rap4 already makes em, and uses em. .40 cal and stfu and sit down are the douche bags only two options.
|
here's one of the .50 cal's shooting. didn't realize that shooting a paintball gun required such a claw shaped trigger hand. lol also, do static targets really need that many rounds shot at it to prove you hit it? how can this be any cheaper?
YouTube - GI Milsim Impulse50 - .50 Caliber Paintball Marker Shooting at PSP World Cup 2009 |
everyone of you knows you cant afford paintball and had to settle for airsoft.
Deep down EVERYONE of you wants to have a hopper and wear those bright colored uniforms so just stop pretending! |
This is funny.
If any of the oldtimers remember the Crosman Spotmarker from way back late 80's those were .50 cal. The Spotmarker revolver was basically the bb CO2 revolver that you can still get at Can Tire with a 6" barrel and drum bored for .50 cal paintballs. If this catches on I can see those old things coming back out for use. Hmm... now that I think about it I think those blowgun paintball doohickeys also use .50 cal. |
See, I like paintball and airsoft. I like airsoft much more, as it doesnt stain my clothes, and its cheaper AND for the most part, its more realistic.
I also dislike the rudeness and immaturity that most paintballers show to airsofters and eachother. EDIT: Kwok, you can still get that at Crappy Tire? Which location? Price? |
Yeah.... Paintball didn't really take off in The Philippines. It's not because paintball is "illegal".
I'm pretty sure paintball wouldn't take off in Japan that well either. People aren't going to buy paintball guns when they already have airsoft guns. Also what's with that kid asking questions? Is he like a reporter for some paintball magazine? |

Von, I know that. Haha. Thats why I was surprised and asked. (The post mentioned that you could still get it at canadian tire.)

The BB gun version is still available iirc at Can Tire; not the Spotmarker which they stopped producing about the late 80s or so. Heheh. I remember the Tippmann full auto clip fed marker. They also put out a .68 cal version after in a very limited quantity but it never took off nor was it usually allowed on most fields. People were scared of the thing. |

I am a former baller, my first Marker was a VM68, I still have it.
You will never get me to play paintball again. Field Owners spoonfeed ballers. Airsoft Events, are self organized and self regulating. Ballers never understand that everyone has access to 500 and 1000 rd mags, that everyone can spray and pray. "If I have it, I am going to shoot it", "But if I have 3000 rounds, I am going to shoot it all" They are so caught up in the spray and pray. There is a distinct mindset difference between the two communities. Paintball Personalities expect to be compensated to attend events - if you want me to come, I want 3 cases of free paint. We attend events, and our Personalities are happy to come out and share their experience and knowledge for free, or moderate cost in the case of a course or clinic. |
hmmmmmm
Cost of owning a weapon in either sport is essentially the same, except on the low end - Canada doesn't really have cheap airsoft guns available that are gameable - whereas paintball does. But you get what you pay for in both sports, and in the end, it comes down to who's behind the trigger. Ammo and gas are a big wallet hit for paintball. 2000 rounds is anywhere between $75(if you lucky) to $200 for 2000 paintballs - compared to $10 in airsoft. To make it even worse you shoot more in paintball due to the way games are played, and the fact paintball guns don't compare in distance or accuracy. Buying tanks and the CO2/HPA that goes into them is another cost that airsoft doesn't have to deal with. I personally got into airsoft due to the different kinds of games played, I like a realistic objective based game. I thought airsoft would be more realistic - and it is. With paintball you clearly have an advantage with a $2000 set-up VS a 200$ set-up. Airsoft isn't nearly as bad. Although I'm not at all a fan of people running around with stupid ROF's...I mean, if the gun your holding shoots 650, 800 SPM as a real-steel weapon; why do you need to throw a li-po in it, switch out all your internal wiring for stuff made from a heavier gauge, in order to to make it a super-high ROF gattling gun. I've yet to see anyone post this as an issue taking away from the realism of the sport, and I'm not sure why. I think exceptionally high ROF's are for donkeys. I personally like to take out opponents with single shots and short 3-5 burst fire as well - again - its not realistic to dump a crap load of shots in a single burst. Realism is the aim of this sport, is it not? Of course real bullets are far more effective than BB's are, they don't get stopped by brush, pushed by wind, carry further, etc. but where do you draw the line? Does no one else have an issue with the ROF some guns produce? Honestly that's what turned me off of paintball. Semi-auto back in the day meant semi-auto, and I used to love playing; but the way guns are made these days nothing is realistically semi-auto. +20 bps? Not when each shot is costing me 5c-10c, nooooo thankyou. |
My line was drawn when 80% of the paintball playerbase here is nothing but squeaky little children. .68, .50 or .40 cal paintballs won't change anything for me.

even with our higher initial weapon cost it would still be cheaper to play airsoft over the course of a year everything else is the same price essentialy

The little accuracy demonstration is so lame. He's shooting stuff at less than 50fts. And the claw trigger rattling make me want to trowup.
|
not too mention in the second video he is only 20 feet away from the targets and still has to lob them, fuckin PB sucks
|
that guy completely went off the point there...
|
I am surprised they went to .50cal as the .40 cal is already in existence (albeit in small quantity) . Sounds like the paintball manufacturers needed to create a new product category to increase sales and revenue. Just think....they will have an "obsolete" category to service as well as a brand new category to promote and develop.....
seems I recall something about this in business courses I took.....hehe Nothing but a money grab and has NOTHING to do with it being cheaper. |
And PS.....they will never get 1.5 million airsoft players to convert to paintball in Japan....even if paintball becomes legal.....not real enough. Japan is the home of "realism".
Just my opinion. |
alright I def stretched the point. I'll start a new thread see if anyone cares to weigh in with an opinion as far as ROF is concerned.
Back to ON point; clearly people aren't going to go from airsoft to paintball just because paint/equipment is marginally cheaper. This has very little to do with saving players a little money. It has to do with people trying to make a lot of money with a "new" product. He has an argument as far as the legality issue, you have to admit it. Countries where paintball was formerly illegal, can take part in the sport using a smaller caliber. That is a black and white point, and one which has significant merit. Will millions of Japanese abandon airsoft and jump into paintball now? Obviously not. But I'm sure millions will play at some point in their life. And a lot of people may take it up seriously. It's a different game, that appeals to different people. This guy has the right idea in THAT regard. |
Most Germans don't want to take part in any kind of war type game anyway, and those that do feel the need to play paintball just hop over the border to a neighboring country that does allow it. Italy however, who knows?

The caveat here is the customer base is many times that of that for airsoft and you have to look back 15 years for the changes to become noticeable. The guys selling the paintball stuff are bullshit artists pure and simple. If you look at dollar for dollar basic rig for airsoft and for pball you could come up pretty even, but then factor in how many weapons and BDUs and vests and so on that airsoft players "need" to have. Then start factoring in the radios and optics and NVG gear, and figure out how many airsofters vs. pbers carry a secondary weapon in game and so on and there's no way you can consider this something you participate in because its affordable. |

Warhammer 40000 and the advent of Ebay (not really related, but I had to say it) I'll be flayed for this, but the arrival of above mediocre quality clones in airsoft could qualify somewhat 3rd ? Humm...Torrents anyone ? |
People stay away from airsoft because its expensive!
|
I think the paintballers are suffering butthurt since we don't have to scrape cum from a PRIDE parade off our gear at the end of the day.
Make your balls smaller, it'll still be disgusting. |
The Apple iPods
Look at how much they used to be, and now they keep adding cheaper and they keep adding features. |
but the ipod cant really count because the added features and lower cost has to do with increasing technology.
and the ipod is besides the point because its not a hobby or a recreation. |

This is only paintball that ever interested me after discovering AS. |
Bike X in 1991 $1099, bike X in 2010 $1099. Both suggested retail prices and not inflation corrected.
Bike with a similar setup to '91 bike X in 2010 $759. So you could either ride the curve and get a much better bike for the same price or you could ride the backslope of the curve and save money while getting equal performance. Human nature isn't setup to say "Whoa, I can get the same for less", the average person is going to to the other way, "Hey I can get better for only a little more". |
I actually did abandon paintball for airsoft to save money. Not, as it turns out, total expenditure (I've spent a crapload more on AS, but I'm much more enthusiastically into it...), but on day-to-day expenses, i.e. ammo and air fills.

It had nothing to do with money. I played paintball once. Hated it and thought it was uber-gay and stupid expensive for how lame it was. I'd play AS even if it was more expensive(thankfully it's not)
|
I must clarify; I (and the group I played with) were "woodsball" players. No neon and BMX gear. I only played one season before I and a couple others decided to make the blessed conversion.
|
Y'know, come to think about it.
The playerbase will have smaller balls by the end of this. Sounds about right to me. |
The horrible secret is out. I'm so ashamed now, I simply COULDN'T afford paintball ...... so here I am, with three AEGs and a GBB trying to compensate :P
|
he says "or whatever" in the vid which means its not the point...
|
Actually right now the next new thing in paintball are powder balls. Basically instead of a capsul filled with paint its a ball of powder that breaks on contact and leaves a mark. Apparently they don't have trouble breaking even at long ranges, and because the are not a liqued filled projectile the flight is more stabalized giving about 50-80ft more range and much greater accuracy. Plus they are actually alot cheaper to make.
|
And I'm guessing the powder will give you a nice, satisfying "puff of smoke" look when it hits.
They should use the "sparkle" capsules like they use in movies to simulate bullet strikes on armour... |

1. 4130 Chromo frames. 2. 3 Piece cranks. 3. High quality plastic pedals. Not all changes are bad. But all those things still fit standard sizes so it can't really compare completely to what we're talking about. But close. I actually really like paintball, it's just waaaay too much money. I mean, the initial cost of airsoft isn't cheap but day to day it's way cheaper. |
Thers good arguments to which one is better, As a lot of you posted that there will be the need to purchase a new marker and new gear, Its true you will if you want to shoot those balls, 68 cal will stay so I dont think that there will be a change in markers, I think what they are trying to do is what brass eagle did. Bring it to the masses at a more afforable price.
I played tournaments for over 10 yrs and i can tell you that this(airsoft) is much cheaper and a lot more fun.. I dont have to worry about the next guy wiping off a hit, The Most of us play fair and know that there is another game. I switched only because of cheaters and that it was too expensive to play paintball. markers for me were a grand and paint for the day was $50- 60 however tournys were 100-120 for a case not to mention gas or airfare and hotels and meals. Ill take airsoft over paintball any day.. |
Having watched the complete video interview, I'm not surprised by the baseless statements made by this fellow. Although I think we all have to agree that there exists for many people on both sides of the fence (airsoft | paintball) a rabid dislike/hatred which makes it easy to spout off whatever you want when speaking to "your" group and no one will challenge what you say when it follows the party line of "those guys want to be like us, but we make more money, therefor are better than them" etc...
However keep in mind that this fellow is the "front man" for his company, he most likely has other companies who do market research for him, and they are telling him "airsofters all want to play paintball but can't afford it". The fact that he is speaking out of his ass is most likely the result of this erroneous research than any personal grudge he may or may not have against the airsoft community. I was surprised to find out that he is Canadian, and his company is based out of Montreal - perhaps one of the established game hosts out in that part of the country should extend an invitation to him to attend a large event, so this misconception can be cleared up for him. It's easy to bitch and moan and keep the "hate" on, instead I say let's let the pballers worry about paintball, and we can get back to awaiting Airsoft Innovation's "revolutionary money saving 3mm bb" ;) |
Naa... Richmond Italia is just a giant douche. Always has been, always will be. Years ago when rainbow coloured speedball was "the thing", he was spouting off how it was the end of scenario/woodsball. Only idiots would not be playing speedball. Well, now that speedball has severly declined in popularity, and companies that tailored just to the speedball community have gone bankrupt, he's talking out the other side of his ass.
|
@WhiskeySix: Fair enough, I like to give the benefit of the doubt but you seem to be familiar w/ him; well seeing as "50 cal" PB won't mean a mass exodus from our sport, guess we can just ignore him.
Edit: Not to be "elitist", but getting interviewed by a bunch of kids doesn't really get you extra "street cred" I suppose, especially w/ this community. |
I'm not entirely sure if .50 paintball is legal in Canada, I know it wasn't last I checked, and the guns were classed as replicas and sellers could not get them in this province. It may be legal now, but I don't know.
|
There is no reason to bicker about the price of paintball vs airsoft.
It really is basically the same... To say that certain airsoft guns are $1000, but certain airsoft guns are also $100. Paintball is the same, $1000 guns and $100 guns. In the long run, ammo-wise airsoft wins the price, but in the long run again how much can you get out of your battery until you need to charge it? paintballers will get refills on their air. But anyway I don't want to get in on more of that but it seems that everyone hates paintball as a sport. Paintball is a great sport! Sure, the people that play it are sometimes stupid... But the community (such as tdotballers) is actually very much like ours, probably with the age verification thingy. ***But anyways .50 cal paintballs would destroy paintball, as most guns now are made for .68 cal I believe? |
Paint ball and Airsoft
is the same game.. just different tools
it makes no sense to discuss what is better ... when in the end it's the same Where AS differs is the "other side of AS" the collection of realistic firearm replicas. this aspect of the hobby is not duplicated in PB where the focus is more on the action and not the tools. Although some of the new small ball PB guns are moving into replica territory as well |
I come from 11 years of paintball experience both bushball, and competitively. Me and few buddies from my team started playing airsoft about 2 years ago for two reasons. One paintball sucks balls in the winter, and number two I can say playing this game (ammo wise, minus the gucci gear) is way cheaper. Right now I play on a competitive team here in BC and we pay $25 a case (for average team its about $35-50) and we shoot 2 cases a practice, and coming to airsoft being able to play two weekends for $25 was amazing. The only real difference I see from the two games is competitive paintball requires a much higher level of athletithism, while airsoft you just cant be labeled an awesome player if your a small fast kid who can run 50yards in 3-seconds witch is pretty much the pro paintball bracket is made up of. Airsoft feels like you need to earn a spot in the community, and earn respect as a player, and defiantly has a scarier face to it than paintball to the public. Also this airsofters are pussies, paintball players are pussies shits gotta end. It may not seem like it but we need eachother with more , and more realistic looking paintball guns coming into the country now are warming people up to replica training weapons (for some reason some of those guns fall under the same category as airsoft guns to customs, and are allowed to pass to there distributors?). As of nowthere's no laws prohibiting .50cal paintballs, and wouldn't make guns shooting them prohibited. Also as for .50cal ruining paintball because everyone owns .68. I was just at USPL and most companies are releasing different inserts for there guns to make them compatible with .50cal.
|
Guitar is my hobby, three things that hobby have incorperated to reduce costs are.
1. Precision machined parts 2. Faux bone and tortiose shell 3. 5 plecktrums for 1$ |
Quote:
pic have always been cheap. precision machined parts isn't new and with a instrument you don't wan't discrepency with the hardware the only change to lower costs in guitars are switching the amps to transistors from tube wich pretty much failed since no one uses transistor amps except a few . cnc machining the guitar bodys and necks but thats somewhat of a plus you get rid of human error and also cut down costs. Also sending the manufacturing to china there realy hasn't been any MAJOR change to the guitar since the invention of the humbucking pickup in the 50's cascading gain stages in the 70's and the invention of the floyd rose nothing else has changed the instrument significantly . |

I played competitive paintball for 14 years and started to lose interest when speedball or"quickshot" became popular. But when Airsoft came along, I dropped Paintball like an uncooperative prom date, not because I though it was cheaper (although if you compare parts and ammo it is) but because Airsoft was everything I wanted to do when I started playing paintball but couldn't. I won't go over all the pros and cons needless to say I went over to the other side with a big smile on my face.
Clearly this guy markets to inexperienced kids who don't know better. In the long run I think most serious players would pick Airsoft over Paintball, maybe not ten years ago, but today for sure. And if not to each their own. I can't stand those blow up bunkers you see at Speedball games, something about them, drives me right up the wall. cheers |
I switched to airsoft from paintball this year because of milsim, using mags vs hoppers and pods, no having to buy new camies every year cause the paint just doesn't come out like it used to, and not having to buy specialty harnesses to hold pods. It's just common sense, most airsofters are cool guys and therefor no need for paint markings. They guys I play with always call their hits, besides who needs cheaters anyway, in the end the guys that cheat do so 'cause they suck and it's the only way they'll stay in the game. Even though the .50 ball will more than likely greatly improve the sport I don't think you'll be seeing the switch from airsoft back to paintball. People that I've seen introduced to airsoft usually never look back, it's just too much fun.
|
Paintball is good for younger players until they can get into airsoft, that's the only way I'm seeing it right now.
|
does anybody know anyone who went the other way from Airsoft to Paintball?

Realistic replicas-yeeeeah! Albeit, there seems to be a merger of the 2 sports trying to happen. How so you say quasimodo? Look @ gbb rifles. What about those 6mm p-balls Ra-Tech has made? Highly pigmented bb's? I think it's realistically possible that there is a place for p-ball in airsoft. Seriously. I would'nt mind doing some milsim games (cqc?) using p-balls, just not w/ something that looks like a plumbing experiment gone bad. On another note, magpul pts is supposed to be coming out w/ the bushy acr w/ quick change capabilities between electric and drop-in gbb. Can you say good bye to split p-balls in your rifle w/ out stripping the gb? Now if someone would invent a hop set-up for use in 6mm that would cross-over to 8mm for us all around freaks. Time to ready myself for the insueing barbeque.
|
funny how he goes off about how it'll be cheaper for the poor kids.. meanwhile all you can hear in the background is a shit load of paintballs behing fired off contently.
I agree with .40 cal, seems stupid to have another one in the middle from the standard .68 |
I say this, to hell with paintball. Airsoft provides things that paintball will probably never be able to, atleast until it basically becomes an airgun with the added factor of the paint bullet.
|
People can afford paintball.. Hell, When there was 'Walk-on' Nights in my local PB Field, All you saw was $800+ Guns.. I was the only one with a 'Shitty $400 Autococker'.
And let me tell you, I sat behind those bunkers, and just plucked people off. I could see the stream of paint coming towards me, and I just ducked back down.. Paintball is about a stand off, and Luck. Airsoft is about realism, and Precision. ^^ At least, that's the way I look at it. I got into airsoft because of the realism factor. Paintball can't come close for the realism. |

A group named DeathKorp Assault Team (DKAT). http://www.deathkorp.com/phpwebsite/ We used to play paintball with them a few years ago. When we told 'em we were leaving paintball for airsoft, they couldn't understand why at all. They told us that they left airsoft because it wasn't hitting hard enough and that it wasn't making enough noise either. I really dont regret my decision to sell my old euhm, A-5 G36 lol. Long live ASC. |
I got into airsoft for the realism behind it all, but there is one thing about airsoft that pisses me right off. I have seen too many guys run around with highly upgraded airsoft guns, using Lipo batteries, giving the gun a similar rate of fire to that of a speedballers paintball gun. To me this is not "realistic" and still so many people in the airsoft community do it. I feel like too many airsofters share the "speedballer" mentality yet because their gun doesn't have a hopper full of paintballs they say its more realistic.
Realism to me is so much more than just what the gun looks like. I have no use for a gun that chews through plastic, yet so many other airsofters depend on it. I run semi auto most of the time, and I choose my shots. Sadly there are too many guys out there that spray as much as they can at a target, hoping they get the kill. In my opinion this leaves much "realism" to be desired. I find there is a lot of "realism" actually missing from the airsoft scene here in Canada, yet so many preach about it being so important. Just my two cents |
All is fair in love and in war.

The guy in the vidio is Richmaon italia, He has personally started most of the Big trends in Paintball. He is all business. and there's nothing wrong with business.
He and the gardners will push 50 cal into a dominate force in Pball like it or not and then move on when it becomes mainstream. 50 cal uses 1/2 the resources of 68 to make, package, and ship, so, sombody will make money on it. The truth is that 80% of people playing Paintball will be new to it in this year. most only use thier gun 3 times. These numbers are much different in Airsoft. Good? bad? Ugly? it's all of the above. |
well he is right. i dont play paintball anymore, i stopped playing pb for plenty of reasons and the cost was one of them. i think the man is a genius. from what i take it seems a bag of paint 'll cost about $20 and youll get 45% more product in a bag, so thats pretty exciting. that also means they can start making pb gun more realistic like real action markers as the markers can be smaller, more diverse/ specialized dimensions/ shapes. ie more realistic, which will help us out as in if realistic paintball markers become standard/ popular it can blanket ours with hte same acception/ freedom.
i like it that spretty cool, i wont stop playing airsoft for it tho, but it makes the sport a little more respectable/ cooler. |
So, okay Balls cost less.
I can see ballers shoot ten times more then they usually do. Sure the cost and realism of paintball may change, but you still have the mindset of players to contend with. Airsoft is great in every way to me. I've never had some guy come up 10 feet away and light me the hell up. In airsoft sure I've had a guy 5 feet away shoot me, but it was just once and in the ass. I'm totally okay with that in some shape or form. There is too many reasons why I don't like Paintball and never will. I never think the 2 will come close when you contend the way both parties think and act. |
|
your completly right kaos, the mind sets are undenyably different and im glad we are segregated, but you can agree there are planty of airsofters that belong in paintball due to theyre mindset, but unfortunatly theyre not there, theyre here. the more realistic the sport get the more reasponsible youd expect it to get.
|
the reason those "paintball mindset " player are in airsoft is because of the replicas .
paintball has nothing on airsoft in terms of Replicating real world weapons. |

We shoyldn't be to quick to lump all teh paintballers to together. a huge portion of them play like AIrsofters. Facts paintballs $39/2000 BB's $25/4000 It's not the cost There are few places that a guy can just go play airsoft for fun. So they end up in paintball. Thats a shame. I agree that True Airsoft milsim games should be for the die hard players. Should there be an entry level where peopel can just experiance games and equipment? I don't know |
