KA PEQ-15 : Custom LED & Laser Lights

Updated : June 11th 2009.

Finally got the green laser module, and made some videos. Here are some pics, and video on YouTube.
I used a hazer machine to show the beam of the laser. But it is still visible at night even though it is clear night. Oh, and the IR filter cap from the LED light broke off. The rubber was just too weak..
Laser is 5mw.

If you didn't fill all that space with hot glue, I'm sure you could fit 4 AA's in there... :P

ShelledPants April 22nd, 2009 22:33

You could probably fit two CR123's in there, which is the same voltage as 4 AA's. I don't know about current draws, but you should get better performance from 2 Cr123's than 4 AA's.

ALSO: I was reading up on laser units, you could rig one to a CR2032 battery, which is really flat. If you got a 6v laser, you could use 2x CR2032 batteries to power it... ;)

Awesome! CR123's don't fit, maybe CR2's.

Do you know where I can find these lasers?

I was just browsing redwolf and looky looky:

http://www.redwolfairsoft.com/redwol...l?prodID=26765

King Arms laser for AN/PEQ, I'm sure you could find room. ;)

EDIT: Oh. but you want green... Then http://www.lasersale.com/catalog/dis...em.asp?id=3232

Shirley April 23rd, 2009 10:12

Hmmm, how can you connect to the battery from those? Or is the Redwolf one uses batteries inside that unit..?
Awesome find.

Shirley April 23rd, 2009 13:09

Fuck, I did it wrong, the 1 hole is where the Blue LED goes, the bottom of the 2 holes is the red laser, then the top hole is the IR Laser.

Here are reference pictures of the RS PEQ15.

Be careful when buying a laser...

Make sure you get something WELL under 5MW... 5MW and above can cause eye damage.. and most of the time lasers are alot more powerful than their rating states.

You may also want to look into proper directional projection LED's that are intended to be used as an illuminating light source...

It looks like you've just got standard LED's

To add to this:

Gutting a $20 Chinese Surefire knock off would be a good place to start for getting that light up and running. Rewire the contacts so you can position the CR123's anywhere you want in the case, and then wire your pressure switch to replace the momentary / constant clicker switch of the flashlight.

if you don't mind dealing with lithium cells you can just use some 14500s in there. basically a lithium cell.. AA sized. Dropin solution but you must make sure that your circuit can handle the 4.2V/cell, cause that is what a lithium cell is hot off the charger.

If that doesn't float your boat, you may try a LiFePO4 14500. less capacity but is 3V, or closer to 2 alkalines in parallel. can handle up to a 10C discharge.

Another idea is to try NiMH cells. Alkalines are horrible when alot of current is required.

I would forget about CR2032s. like alkalines they cannot provide alot of current. That is why two coin cells don't burn out the LED in photon lights.

I just figured from no electrical experiences, I can just connect the batteries with wires than the plates.. omg... lol This project for this peq is going to take some time, time to gut out the shit again.

Invest in a decent soldering iron. ;)

ILLusion April 23rd, 2009 16:16

that hot glue is brutal. Redo it all. lol

Amos April 23rd, 2009 16:17

Atleast there's no white-out :D!!

Shirley April 23rd, 2009 22:11

I finally got the light, but not blue, it's white. And the cool thing is the bulb sticks out, and the wires go nicely in. Bright as hell, and using 2 AA batteries. Found some small laser units on ebay for 20$ and very small. Figured I'm going to go green and not red.
Here are the pics.

why green? i would go for a red unit. a green beam is much easier to see so you give yourself away to the enemy a lot easier. important is to see the dot not the beam.

Awesome, thanks for that hitman!

huang June 11th, 2009 20:43

hey, man. The postion of the LED and laser should be switched

Drake June 11th, 2009 20:47

Neat, but I'd borrow a pair of NVGs or a camera that's good at picking up IR (like Sony Nightshot) and see how much IR light that laser is leaking.

Actually I think he has it right: the focusable IR illuminator is on the left (with the dial), and co-aligned aiming IR and visible lasers on the right (visible red on bottom -- which he mentioned he got wrong)

It is very visible under night. Played with this at a night game, clear night, visible beam. Not even sure how far it reaches, but it reaches far...
c3sk had a Russian NV scope, I forgot to ask to use it and to record how it is under NV. Forsure it will light up pretty damn good.

Yeah, I couldn't place the module on the bottom, it was just too thick..

Thenooblord June 11th, 2009 23:07

how can i get one of these?

I made it my own.. lol
Took a Kings Arm PEQ15 battery box,
Buy a CR2 or CR123a battery, get some wires, buy a laser module capable of powering 3v, buy an LED light capable of 3v, a switch, and the rest is just yourself wiring.

You can PM Huang, he also has his own PEQ15 made.

RacingManiac June 12th, 2009 00:44

Huang's PEQ doesn't have visible "beam", pretty damn bright though...

Any 5mw green laser would show a visible beam.

The beam in my pics and vids show more because I used a hazer machine. :p

How did you get the strobo effect?
Did the led had a pcb circuit with it?
I searched ebay for a similar led but found nothing.
Can you tell me what terms to use or the item title
or something.

The LED that strobed was my 150Lumen Torch Flashlight..

You can use any LED bulb that can be powered from a 3v source, anything else can burn out the LED bulb.

mirrage June 14th, 2009 04:09

Ooooh!
I didn't get it at first.
Thanks a lot or the fast answer!
