M14 stuff

Does this sound like a good setup for a "kinda" beginner
TM M14 socom
Silencer (not sure which kind)
Bi-pod
Sling
Scope (maybe 4x)

Any suggestions on what make? or model and Price check?

Thanks

Donster October 26th, 2008 16:07

a 4x scope is kinda pushing it. but its ok. the silencer is not needed. everything else sounds ok, but where are the batteries, charger and mags? THOSE are what you need if you are a beginner.

ShortCut October 26th, 2008 16:07

First off, you'll have to get age-verified, if your under 18, you'll have to wait, cause canadian tire stuff is shit

Erennert October 26th, 2008 17:32

Yea the age verifivation is comin soon, but the silencer looks sick, maybe a 2x scope? and i tihnk like a 8.4v-9v. For mags, maybe an extra one, im not trigger happy, i shoot at what i can hit, and maybe some .23g, or .2 BB's. Charger will just be a standard 8.4-9 charger, w/e i decide to get. You tihnk maybe like a new fire selector peice, cuz ive heard that the one on the M14 breaks easily?
and maybe a tightbore barrel?
any price checks or suggestion on length ect would be helpful

Donster October 26th, 2008 17:46

dude, get .25 at least for bbs. trust me. i think .28s will be better. get a hi-cap and you are set for mag capactity. the selector that you hear about is actually the selector arm that is located inside the mechbox. is isn't that fragile. its real weakness is seen when you take apart your M14, that is when it is most likely to break. they make a steel version of those. you can order them online. a tightbore is always a plus. i recommend the prometheus one. 420mm if you are getting a Socom 16, 500mm if you are getting a full length M14.

BTW: fill out your profile

Erennert October 26th, 2008 17:55

Will do, and also could you provide me with a rough price for the tightbore? the 420mm

Muffin October 26th, 2008 17:58

It doesn't hurt to do your own research either man, just simply go to any retailing airsoft website(redwold, WGC, UNcompany, etc.) and search for your desired parts.
A general price would be around $40 before shipping.

Donster October 26th, 2008 18:03

fill out your profile and check out this site. there are others, but i dont like some and other dont like the ones i like. its all personal preference. for example, i never order anything from UNcompany or WGC. it just never works for me. i order from this company and DEN trinity. but redwolf is your best bet. ill give you a tip. in the search bar at the top of the Redwolf site i just gave you, type in "M14" and hit "Enter". You will crap your pants.

http://www.redwolfairsoft.com/redwolf/airsoft/Home

Amos October 26th, 2008 18:20

It should look more like this:

TM M14 Socom
2X Intellect 8.4 3300 MAH Large type batteries
1X Good charger
5 TM Locap magazines (Trust me.. "I only shoot what I can hit" doesn't always work in airsoft)
Sling
2 bags of BB Bastard .25's

Don't get a Bipod... They're useless and make the gun front heavy, Learn to brace it up against trees or other things around you. Don't get a scope. A stock TM M14 doesn't need a scope (Hell, I ran a HIGHLY upgraded TM M14 for 2 years and I used nothing but iron sights)

Are you guys talking about the cut-off lever? That thing doesn't break, it gets worn down with semi-automatic use. You don't really need to replace it until it fails, if it fails at all.

I recommend going with Amos' suggestions. Beware that TM14 has a really tight battery compartment, and that it's normal for people to cram the battery in and leave it in when charging. The 8.4v 3300mah Intellect Amos mentioned is probably your best choice, you don't need 9.6v.

And he's also right that you'll need more mags. TMs are the best, but only available in locap. I'd recommend staying away from G&P, I've personally experienced and heard nothing but bad things about G&P's M14 mags. KA's M14 are ok, but can have some issues that require some light modification to fix.

For ammo, use 0.25g, because 0.28g is too hard on the fps for stock guns.

TCLP October 26th, 2008 19:29

Amos list is good follow it. its a good way to keep it simple which is the best place to start. Also when the age verification comes through try to get a stock gun that way you aren't paying for upgrades to a gun that you might not like. And when you have played with the gun for abit then you can add stuff like silencers, scopes and bipods if that's what you want to do.
Also check out www.airsoftparts.ca which should have everything you are looking for and has top notch service.

no i was talking specifically about the selector arm.

Erennert October 26th, 2008 20:42

Ok, these are all great suggestions but could all these things be bought through a ACS seller for when my age verif is done?

The Saint October 26th, 2008 20:43

Yep.

other than the gun, everything else is legal to import on your own.

Doc October 26th, 2008 21:08

a m14 is a good starter gun if you have the funds for it. it was my first gun and i still have it/love it. personaly i think the germtech g5 silencer looks the best (what i have on the gun right now) i went with the TM M14 socom because its alot easyer to swing around corners then the fullsized one. (with the sliencer its just a little longer then the standard m14)

But be warned, its heavy as hell and i wouldent sugest it for a smaller person, im 6'6" and a prity big guy, and even my arms hurt after running threw a feild for a few hours lugging this around.

http://img363.imageshack.us/img363/7505/dsc1415om6.jpg

Erennert October 26th, 2008 21:13

could you tell me the relative total length of maybe a socom with your silencer, and without it, and it weighs about 12 pounds fully equiped, as in abttery, BB's, am i right?

And if your a smaller guy, would this gun be good to cary around for like maybe 1-2 hours with a sling? and if i get tired, use bipod and semi-snipe kinda thing?

also another thing, i have seen many people with those guns in your signature, where do i find these, so when i get my gun, i am able to add these.

Muffin October 26th, 2008 21:15

Their pixel art guns, google it.

Sling only does so much when you've got the weapon at the ready (fighting versus travelling), and can get in the way if you're not used to one or buy a cheap one (a good sling is worth the money, IMO).

You really don't need a bipod. If you're so tired that you're going prone most of the time, the ground will provide just as much support for your rifle and a bipod will be the least of your concerns.

MestHead October 26th, 2008 21:43

IMO if you are begginner you should drop all the extras. Just get this...

TM M14 Socom
Sling

Don't use your money for a silencer because its just for looks and not important right now, scope is probably going to be more annoying than useful unless its just a reddot no magnifying. Also, the bipod isn't rally needed because by the time you deploy it the target will be gone and chance are you aren't going to stay in the same spot at once. Its sounds like you are trying to put together a semi sniper kit, I would advise against it.

Erennert October 26th, 2008 21:53

ok, so you would sugest, just the simple TM M14 socom, sling. And later for upgrades, just simply a 420mm prometheus barrel? (and i would get a exped friend or gun doc to put that in, never taken a gun apart) and .25g BB's
and eventually i think i will get the bi-pod, with my friends, we usually play pretty open games, not CQC, so sniping could be a possibility, especially if i get the barrel, and eventually upgrade some internals.

Retro October 26th, 2008 22:17

You live in langley, try and make it out to either BCAC or Op-For's games they run everyother weekend and play just down at 192nd and 16th ave at a place called panthers paintball. op-for.ca and bcairsoft.com are the web sites and an age verifyer is usaly there and can get you squared away quite easly.

Erennert October 26th, 2008 22:29

Yea, i've paintballed at Panther before, its a good place
Also, what are some good guns for CQB and field

Doc October 26th, 2008 22:31

m4, ak or any type of AR

Short guns, I got my hands an M4 CQB-R, nice for close quarters.

Erennert October 26th, 2008 22:38

What about a CA G36 with silencer? (i have a thing for silencers :P)

A full length G36 with silence is a ridiculously long weapon.

Whatever you get, play with it before you slap a silencer on. You might find yourself bumping into a lot of things even without the silencer on.

Kookamater October 26th, 2008 22:53

I know the stock TM M14 I have is extremely hard to maneuver with behind cover due to its length. I held a Socom variant of it and it's even heavier than the larger M14!

I wouldn't add a silencer. Not until you get a feel for having a sub-long weapon in your hands and maneuvering around with it. You'd be surprised how much a long gun can get in the way.

Muffin October 26th, 2008 22:55

Nice thing about the G36 is the folding stock, but as others have said, silencers add close to 8 inches(it varies) to the front end.

Erennert October 26th, 2008 23:01

Thanks for the input again, but for some reason, i just LOVE the look of a silencer, but yea, wut about one of the shorter G36's and then a smaller silencer? :p

Sorry if i sound persistant

Kookamater October 26th, 2008 23:09

No silencers until you put in at least one game with your chosen gun.

There, sound fair? :P

What about a silencer on a pistol instead of your AEG? Would that suite your silencer needs?

Erennert October 26th, 2008 23:58

Alrite, Alrite, ill try without it first when i get my gun :P
And i don't think ill get a sidearm, at least not yet.

Kookamater October 26th, 2008 23:58

1911 + silencer = sex

Again, once you get a feel for your gun, then you can see if a silencer is really necessary.

Erennert October 27th, 2008 00:08

Good Good, i think i WILL get the feel for it :P :P

Retro October 27th, 2008 00:15

So what are you going to get? The Socom or the G36 :D, both are good starter guns i think

ShortCut October 27th, 2008 00:19

AK47 FTW!!!

Erennert October 27th, 2008 00:21

Well not sure yet, but no offense to anyone, but i dislike the AK-47 for some reason, i guess too common of a gun...i unno my opinion

KNIVEZS October 27th, 2008 00:22

+1 for the m14 socom

Erennert October 27th, 2008 00:24

Lol, a poll now? Maybe ill get both :p Share em with a friend and split the cost or sumthin :p

Kookamater October 27th, 2008 00:25

So long as it has a large type battery, go for it. I suggest a G3, love those rifles. Not a fan of the 36C or K versions of em though.

Erennert October 27th, 2008 00:29

Large battery for which one? and G3's look too boxy to me, i'm kinda picky :p

Retro October 27th, 2008 00:31

My vote is for Socom! Lots you can do with it down the road. + if you ever get sick of it your local and it wont be a far drive for me to come take it off your hands ;)

Erennert October 27th, 2008 00:41

What do you think would be the smallest size of person (sounds weird but can't think of any other way of saying it) that could use the M14 effectively?

Kookamater October 27th, 2008 01:17

Large battery for... anything. Read the buying a first gun review Here.

The Socom should be easy to handle if you're small or big. The bigger original M14 should be handled by someone of a above average height or build IMO.

Erennert October 27th, 2008 01:22

Ohh ic, so for example could a teenager handle the socom easy? like say around average height....uhmmm 5'7? and a new adult (18-20) handle the normal? or doesn't really matter what size?

theshaneler October 27th, 2008 01:26

i have an m14 (not socom) im 6feet tall and i have no issues using the m14, it really is all about how you use it, m14's are meant to be marksman's rifle, if you want something to run out shooting, thats what M4s and aks are for :p

Erennert October 27th, 2008 01:33

alrite, thanks a bunch to everyone

Doc October 27th, 2008 02:00

if there is anyway you can get your hands on one before you put down the $600 to buy one, go for it. once you hold one you will realise how much it actualy weighs.

the silencer on my m14 actualy does ALOT. because of the heavy metal and thick plastic stock you cant really hear much noise comming from the gearbox/motor. most of it comes from the end of the barrel. slap a silencer on there and you can barely hear it.

Erennert October 27th, 2008 19:41

600??????? what???
i thought they were 400!?!?!?!
if its like 600, i might have to go for an AK, or save longer!

Kookamater October 27th, 2008 19:52

My TM M14 cost 800$ when it all added up.

Airsoft ain't cheap, mah boi.

Moderate October 27th, 2008 19:59

Recently got mine.

Cost me my JG SIG 552, and my M16. I'd estimate that it cost me about $800 in guns sold & traded...But damn is it sexy.

Thanks

Erennert October 27th, 2008 21:27

I haven't got my verification yet :/

pusangani October 27th, 2008 21:28

so get 'er done then :D the world of airsoft is but a "age verified" tag away!

Kookamater October 27th, 2008 21:32

Also, you'll probably be spending about 600+, regardless of the gun you buy.

Erennert October 27th, 2008 22:32

Why do you think so? Because of add-ons and BB's and such?

Kookamater October 27th, 2008 22:36

Check the FAQ's. It's the simple fact that Airsoft is in a fragile state in Canada, and as such the costs of importing such weapons is of high risk. Throw in all the licenses and BS you need to go through to legally import these guns, and you got yourself some nice n' high prices.

Erennert October 27th, 2008 22:44

What if i said it wouldn't all be legal..... :P with no licenses

Kookamater October 27th, 2008 22:53

Then you can expect no sympathy or respect from anyone here.

Erennert October 27th, 2008 22:58

What about throught the sellers in Canada and stuff.....? I mean't like not goign over a border

Kookamater October 27th, 2008 23:01

There's no sellers until you get truly Age Verified here. Once you're AV'd, it's totally smooth sailing to local Canadian lads all across the country selling just about anything. End of discussion. :D

Retro October 27th, 2008 23:06

You live in langley its literaly a 15 min drive to get age verified on a game day... all they do is take your name / ASC handle look at your license for age and your done really.

Erennert October 28th, 2008 00:59

well, i'll do that as soon as possible :D
thanks for all the advice everyone, this thread has really halped me, although i have been wondering, is a TM Ak of some kind a good gun outs the box?
or do i need like a tightbore barrel, and maybe a spring and internal upgrades to get it up to some really descent quality?

Amos October 28th, 2008 01:07

I'd avoid TM AK's...

With the way AK's are right now with the Afermath Kraken on the market.. You need to get a full metal one... If you don't.. well you may as well have bought a kraken!

Erennert October 28th, 2008 21:10

rofl ok, which is better TM MP5 A5 or ICS MP5 A5 OR CA MP5 A5

Kookamater October 28th, 2008 21:13

There is no 'better' though some people here might disagree. Each brand of that MP5 has its benefits. Ex: CA is nice and hefty. All metal. ICS 'might' be the same.

I'd go with a TM in terms of a first gun. Internal quality can't be beat. (Again, some might disagree) But my TM AK-47 has never needed to be taken apart due to something breaking, nor has it needed any parts, and I've put a solid 25'000 rounds through it.

Erennert October 29th, 2008 01:03

so you recomend the TM-AK-47, is that the name, or any other specific names?

Kookamater October 29th, 2008 01:37

Well this is all personal preference. If you looked at that buying guide, it said a JG MP5SD was a good choice.

You still have a while to choose what gun you want to start with. Take your time, think about what you want, and pursue it once your verified. Go with an Assault Rifle, is my best advice. AK-47, G3, M16, M14, are all decent choices, but it's up to you. Get verified and you'll be able to truly decide what you want.

On a side note, it's healthy you're asking questions. If you want my personal opinions on your starter gun feel free to message me.

Erennert October 29th, 2008 17:23

Would you recommend this gun?
http://www.airsplat.com/Items/ER-SRC-0501TM.htm
I was wondering with this gun if the top rail comes off so i can mount a scope on there instead of more foward?

Amos October 29th, 2008 17:32

Get verified and see what's available in Canada first.

Once you're verified everything will be much clearer.

Erennert October 29th, 2008 17:39

Alrite, but i had an idea for shipping if the gun i want is out of Canada. Phone a sports store and get them to order it since they have licences for that stuff, and then i buy it off them for a higher price for their hassle?

No, that won't work. Have you had a chance to read the legality stuff we linked you? Because it explains why that wouldn't fly.
