Edit: And where did you get the grips and magwell? 0_o |
TM 1911, Nova Springfield Vickers Custom kit, Nova Magwell MSH(from Redwolf) and the grip is off eBay...

Just got back from the gunshow today, got myself a new pair of grips for my M1911.
The gun is sorta in the shit right now after Operation KSS4 (Being so humid, it rusted up a lot of stuff, had to sand down the slide (Going to fix it up, I promise!). But now, its in the works of restoration... http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...Picture006.jpg http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...Picture005.jpg http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...Picture009.jpg Now, I need a bit of help, if any of you guys are good with metal and polishing it, I need to find a way to polish it up and tint it to the color of the grips. Any Ideas? ________ Crack Rehab Forum |
As far as polishing goes, keep upping the grit of the sandpaper, 1000 grit, 1200 grit, 1500 grit, 1800 grit, 2000 grit... until you think it's shiny enough. For tinting it? I would suggest a painter's inks or dyes of that type... like you would use on a Warhammer model I guess. I don't know how that will hold up over time, but it will get you the look you want.

not the 1911 i ever dreamed id wind up with, i love the classic ww2 era 1911, i think the finish on them is just beautiful. so when i bought the metal body for mine and needed to strip the paint off it i figured, great! now i can get some blueing polish and do that, itll look so beautiful!!
but alas i found out the blueing finish is for steel, so i bought some aluminum blackening for it, tried that (that was an ordeal). i applied it with no reasult except the edges, i quickly realised that it wasnt going to stain oxadized aluminum so i need to buff it all off. i tried that and the finish was... well it left alot to be desired and it wasn not very durable, scratched easy and it was a satin looking.... not nice anywho. i knew i didnt want to paint it as i wanted a durable scratch resistant finish, so polishing it was my next option and i did NOT want to do that. im not against bling guns, they look very nice, but i dont see their use on the field. so i buffed the affected portion off and polished it, and found that finish was just awful. since i had buffed it with a steel wire wheel, it had scored the surface up and when polished it looked like a cheap plastic dollar stor cap gun. the surface looked like a chrome orange peel and horrible. so i was pretty discouraged at this point and didnt want to leave it at the dull grey aluminum look as it seemed unfinished to me, thankfully my previous attempts were done on a small portion for testing purposes. so i was scuffing up the surface to remove the chrome orange peel look and realized that if i buffed it enough it smothed out the surface to make a mirror finish (yah, duh, i dunno why this didnt remember this before), and if i polished it after that, what would happen? eureka! lol. again, not egsactly what i wanted but it does look good and its kinda special as i put in the manuel time to do this. it took me (and im not egsadurating) 7 full hours to polish this by hand w/ 400 grit sandpaper to get the surface even, then apply the polish to shine it up. my next step is to get nirbee to make some custom wood grips for it if he ever gets back to me. http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i2...le/1911004.jpg http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i2...le/1911001.jpg |

My dirty little secrets
The top pic is the most recent. All are full metal with the exception of the slide on the MEU, the lower frames on the two WA Wilson Combats and the lower frame on the Detonics. Oh and the boxer isn't full metal yet either but I'm working on that.http://i441.photobucket.com/albums/q...RMOURY/042.jpg

Looks like a Kimber 1911... a little, but some would strongly disagree. Gun geeks are very particular about their authenticity. Your gun is really a Hicap, so that's why it's getting some flack. Just 'splaining. |
The colour is all wrong in this picture. I need a real camera... But would rather save the money for airsoft lol.

It is a really sweet gun though. |

Any comments as to its performance/quality? |
Quality is seemingly quite good. Not great mind you, but good. The external build quality is very good though.
Performance, can't say yet. Haven't had a chance to game it. But it chronies as high as 290 on 0.25s. Settles down to an average at around 275fps with 0.25s, not 0.20s. So it is over 300. |

the new Guns and Ammo Annual Book of 1911 inspired me to change the compensated Springfield to something more normal....

Much better RM, never did like the look of that overpriced paper weight on the end.
While yer at it get rid of that silly magwell, and use regular 1911 mags. Scooby, I'm under the impression the VFC meu kit is only a little above par with the guarder metal kits. (specificly the tm 1911) *disclaimer all other VFC product I've handed is TOP NOTCH* I presume you put it together, so can you comment on that? *edit I KANT SPULL |
nah...magwell is here to stay...it works and adds weight to a mostly aluminum pistol....
|
THEN DIE!!!!!!
I'm sorry. I really like classic 1911's |
hahahhah....thats ok...my Kimber doesn't have magwell...still using MEU mag though(they also don't stick as much for some reason....)
|
RacingManiac, that is still a beautiful pistol. The little details you added definitely look great even/especially without the compensator. I have the same Nova slide & frame kit and while it's beautiful, yours is definitely unique. A couple questions for you:
Do you find that the PDI Barrel "meshes well" with the Nova barrel bushing? Did you see the Vicker's type magwell made by Nova (link)? They seem to match the magwell in this picture which attached to a slide/frame that looks a lot like the Nova kit you and I have. Perhaps the Nova kit was modeled after the real-steel 1911 in the picture? I almost want to copy it exactly... |
VFC kit was a bitch to install many hours of filing
metal over all is good better than guarder old stuff, trades deep and crisp. I didn't like the primer type paint job it came with so I painted it with krylon. I am over all really happy with it, I game it on a regular basis, not a wall hanger. Its kinda hard to tell the quality at 3mgpix and I really dont know the first thing about taking hi quality pics, but its a beautiful piece. |

The VFC kit is probably below Guarder in quality because both slide and frame are sand cast aluminum, with cast-in trades. Guarder's trades seem to be engraved after, and not cast-in... can't believe I'm siding with Guarder... uhg. You can see the roughness of the trades here on Airsoft Global— http://airsoftglobal.com/product_inf...oducts_id=8129 But for the low purchase price, it's a decent choice for a game gun, if you don't mind the fitment work. PS: Simple picture advice— stay at the distance your cam needs to focus 24–36", then use the zoom to get in better, also avoid the flash and shoot with daylight. Cheapo tripod does wonders. |
Quote:
PDI barrel and Nova bushing is of no issue....the fitting of another barrel to the slide that was originally used with the SD was more of a problem. PDI barrel's bottom "cam"(the profiled tab that rides on the hop-up chamber) is slightly taller and different shape....had to do more filing to get the gun to return to battery properly.... I think the only way to use flash is to bounce it.... |
Excuse my poor picture taking. Here is my custom TM 1911:
http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/c...r/IMGP4222.jpg http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/c...r/IMGP4224.jpg Its really a love it/hate it kind of thing. I personally love the concealed hammer. What I didn't include is the silencer and the MEU mag. |
I guess I could also add these to the list as well:
http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/c...r/IMG_1874.jpg http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/c...r/IMGP3623.jpg http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/c...r/IMG_1871.jpg There is my HFC colt 1908 vest pocket, TM Detonics with the next pic showing custom grips and of course the Tanaka browning Hi Power. I wasn't quite sure if that one belonged here but its here anyway. |
Just got it a couple of weeks ago, haven't been able to game it properly yet... waiting on extra mags held up at customs. :p

http://www.pbase.com/racingmaniac/im...6/original.jpg
http://www.pbase.com/racingmaniac/im...7/original.jpg http://www.pbase.com/racingmaniac/im...2/original.jpg annoyingly Redwolf delivered a normal guiderod as opposed to a Palsonite one....at anyrate I did some mod so that I can torque the 2 piece rod properly so it won't loosen up... |
That is a shame, the palsonite guide rod would have been an excellent look combined with the barrel. I am a big fan of the full length guide rod myself, makes it look more complete... I put in a nova stainless guide rod and plug on my Vickers Custom.
|
I have a feeling it was discontinued a while ago though.....PDI's site doesn't have it up anymore(plus tons of stuff is out of stock), RW probably didn't update their listing....I thought about returning it but decided it was too much trouble to deal with an oversea seller....
|
I completely agree, especially for a small part like this. The overall look is still achieved and like I said, mine is stainless as well. Watching your Vickers Custom evolve to it's current state has always been a point of inspiration for my 1911 projects.
I ordered from PDI once myself, got a palsonite inner barrel for my Vickers Custom and a few other small parts for other guns. I'm looking at getting a few more things someday, but I'm starting to get the discontinued feeling as well for some of them. Hopefully the out of stock items will be in stock again soon as I have some 1911/2011 projects to complete and others to start. |
pounce_the_jaguar, is that tanaka Browning HP really DA?
|
nope single action only. Its the old ww2 belgian version. It does have a magazine cut off though which makes it really annoying to get ready for storage.
|
Thanks. Nice piece you got :) The Browning gives me weird feeling: it looks ugly yet I want one so much and it's so cool...
|
haha I personally find it decent looking. I like it better then a hi cappa, but I can see I'm the minority in that respect on this thread. To bad it doesn't preform as well at a hi cappa though.

http://www.pbase.com/racingmaniac/im...1/original.jpg http://www.pbase.com/racingmaniac/im...2/original.jpg Brought this gun to a more finished state due to an oppotunity to trade for some optic...we'll see if it works out....if it doesn;'t then I'll leave it sitting pretty til my ProG4 stuff comes...and keep saving money for the same optic...:D |
Is part of that grip carbon fiber?
|
The whole grip is carbon fibre, just part of the hard resin outside is finished in rough texture, while the rest smooth.
|
Very nice, shes a beaut. Always loved your builds!
|
How easily do scratches show up on the chrome parts on that GBB? I was thinking of buying a few of those pieces to fit on the 1911 I'll have in my posession soon. I will be gaming it.
|
Wow, some brilliant guns in here; the Kimber ones must've cost a fortune. Haven't seen one of these yet though...
