My AKM and Rusty (aka, yet another goddamn ANCorp AK thread)

So I've progressed some more on my AKM, and a LOT more on that Kraken AK that I wanted to build into something for CQB. Hell, I've done most of the work a long time ago, just haven't had a sunny morning off work to take pictures.

Some pictures do suck big time, I'm aware. Better ones some other time.

Thought I'd go over everything, an overview of both.

AKM

Parts list - External
TM AK-47 based
King Arms AK-74 metal body
King Arms AK-74 safely lever
DTP metal rear sight block
ICS re-enforced outer barrel
ICS bolt carrier
ICS 1000m rear sight
Element ribbed top cover
Element brick red pistolgrip
---Real steel parts:
Romanian AKM stock
Romanian buttplate
Romanian Trap door
Romanian Sling loop

Hungarian gas block

Parts list - Internal

SystemA hopup rubber
6.03mm tightbore
Element M110 spring
Element bearing spring guide
Area1000 metal bushings

External refinishing
All airsoft metal parts stripped and blued
Wood stripped and stained/clearcoated

What needs to be done
Takedown lever needs to be made more stiff
Pistol grip needs to be dyed darker and made to have a less uniform finish

Rusty (Iraqi survival rifle)

Parts list - External
Kraken clear AK-47 based
Element AK-74 metal body
ICS AK-74 safely lever
ICS ribbed top cover
King Arms metal front end
King Arms pistolgrip
Unknown steel AKM muzzle brake
Unknown laminated AK-47 foregrips
TM Krink front sight
Cyma underfolding stock with folding hardware

Parts list - Internal
So far - stock internals, cut inner barrel

External refinishing/work
1st -All metal parts stripped and aluminum blackened (except top cover and muzzle brake, those were blued)
2nd - All metal parts worn down
3rd - All metal parts corroded/rusted with saltwater
4th - All metal parts washed and polished
5th - Wood scratched, "engraved", and soaked in water a bit

Outer barrel was shortened significantly, and the front sight and gasblock/pipe combo was replaced with a TM AK Beta spetsnaz front sight for a nice Krinked look.

Metal body had fullstock tabs dremelled off, and modified extensively to take a Cyma underfolding stock (what a pain in the ass)

What needs to be done
Stock up down wobble needs to be cured (not a big problem)
Open hole in rear of body needs metal plate installed (already have plate, just need to attach and refinish)

Unfortunately I sold off two of my other AK's before taking pictures (Black Kraken AK-47, and Dboys AKS-74)

I think that's it for now, better pics might come in a couple days, especially of the AKM. It's pics don't do justice what so ever.

As always, thanks for lookin'.

Cheers,
Alex

ASC's Kalashni-king at it again.

Amazing work, bro.

What's the FPS on the cat?

Depends on how hard I slam something onto the floor, about 20-30fps (chronographed).

Thanks gents.

ProbeJax April 21st, 2008 13:57

I like that short one! What's up with the red tape?

seabass April 21st, 2008 13:58

great aks man, I notice you said you got rid of the D-boys? that gonne be my next project gun, any reason you ditched it?

It was too... complete. I love project guns.

But I now regret it, as I have a "dress up" project in mind for one. Maybe someday.

Red tape was to solidify the handguard, it started to wobble after I soaked it.

CDN_Stalker April 21st, 2008 14:18

Those are two of the best AK builds I've seen yet, VERY nice (even though I'm not much of an AK guy), great attention to detail and very authentic looking.

What is it with cats getting into pics anyways, always annoyed me in the past.

youonlywish April 21st, 2008 14:25

'rusty' is by far the most accurate and 'real' airsoft AK I've seen. I'm a stickler for getting the 'feel' of milsim.. that is AWESOME. The wear on the gun makes it.

Ronan April 21st, 2008 14:33

Very nice :)

Donster April 21st, 2008 14:42

what do you have written in russian on the grip and those are some of the nicest AKs i have ever seen, and i am an AK hater. You make me want to get an AK. That being said, i think on your first rifle you should have a wood pistol grip if you can, that was it will look even better IMO.

Lerch April 21st, 2008 14:44

You need to toss those up on Arnies alongside the AK's that GRIM! has been posting ;)

ProbeJax April 21st, 2008 14:44

Umm, I'm AK ignorant, but I think there should be a folding stock on it, right?

Cassius April 21st, 2008 14:54

ancorp, can I send you my AK so you can create such a cool finish on it??

Brakoo April 21st, 2008 14:55

Holy crap Ancorp that's one sweet AK, I'm talking about the rusty one. I think I have an idea on what I'll do with my AKS74U now, just need to assemble a loadout to match the beaten up look of the AK and I'll be fine.

ancorp April 21st, 2008 15:08

Holy crap lots of questions. Thanks to all those that complemented the AKs.

It's my "nickname", a common name for those named Alexander.

See here (switch to Cyrillic encoding in your browser):
http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/T...635/names.html

"Aleksandr (Александр) = Sasha (Саша), Shurik (Шурик) "

Perhaps, as earlier AKM's did use wood pistol grips. Problem is they're a real pain in the ass in airsoft form. Especially for stamped receivers. So that won't be happening. Although I have considered doing that for "Rusty", but once again, pain in the ass.

Hah, I can't compete with Inokatsu/RMW kits, those are all stamped steel, my AK's still have alloy bodies and TM compatibility. He also has real steel mags converted to airsoft, which I don't have... yet.

There IS a folding stock on the small AK...

Yes, but you won't get it back.

I'll be using "Rusty" with GP steel mags, and a Chicom chest rig.

AKM also gets steel mags, as well as a set of bakelites, an M22 Russian vest, and Berezka camo.

Cheers,
Шурик

Dracheous April 21st, 2008 15:36

"Rusty" makes me want an AK again :(

Super job Ancorp, now, if only it had the upper gas tube cover. . . :D

Send me the specs and I can make one out of wood for ya. To finish that thing off, no charge! I'm sure I'll have some firewood kicking around large enough to mill one out for ya.

Goodl2ussian April 21st, 2008 15:40

DUde. Those are fuckin amazing loving the "Shurik" thing haha

Hey bud,
Thanks for the offer but I already have a gas tube cover. Decided to go without it.

Thanks gents, didn't expect this kind of response for the "Rusty".

Keep it up :D

KNIVEZS April 21st, 2008 21:29

totally love it

Beazer April 21st, 2008 22:20

can you pm me or put up how you created that iraqi gunstick?
i wouldn't mind making something similar, and would like to see how you went about creating it.

deus April 21st, 2008 22:23

The polished wood and the rusted metal... I want. I agree with whoever posted above though, that pistol grip kind of detracts from the amazing look.

As my original post quickly explained:

-I took apart the gun, stripped all the metal parts of paint.

-Polished up whatever parts I could.

-Used Aluminum black to chemically finish all the parts (top cover and muzzle brake were finished with Bluing earlier).

-Used fine sandpaper to remove some finish on the edges and rivets and so on.

-Polished it a bit again to remove any straight scratches from the sand paper (not much really).

-Mixed water with a LOT of table salt, dunked all the parts in over night.

-Pulled parts out for the day, they were all rusted and corroded by evening.

-Cleaned up using water and such.

-Polished till most of the corrosion/rust is gone, and left with a nice worn out finish.

Rinse and assemble.

I did this for the following metal parts:

Body
Top cover
Bolt carrier
Safety lever
Trigger guard with magcatch
Rear sight block
Rear sight
Rear sight moving parts
Front sight
Handguard retainer
Muzzle brake

Wood - still needs work, I only wore it a bit. Used a bunch of rocks in my hand and rubbed the wood against them, as well as did a bit of sanding if I remember correctly. Then I carved my name into them and left them under water for several hours. Still needs more wear and soaking.

Good luck.

Cheers,
Alex

AXe Hound April 21st, 2008 23:44

ancorp you are my hero :P my AK looks like it was just bought off the shelf i really want to make it look like crap:D (good looking crap)

Bontic April 22nd, 2008 00:54

Kalashni-tastic!

BBS April 22nd, 2008 00:55

your project is very sucessful. I just love the simplicity of AKs. btw: what are you going to use to prevent the metal from oxidizing?

attack-beaver April 22nd, 2008 02:37

fappied fap fap fap

Beazer April 22nd, 2008 06:52

sorry, I should have been more clear.
Primarily I was wondering how you modded the reciever for the underslung stock and front sight assembly.

I had a plastic Cyma AKS receiver laying around. Took off the stock and its hardware, and duplicated the two large holes on to the Element AKM body, using a drill press and a dremel mostly. As for the rear tabs - cut em off.

For the front I had to cut the outer barrel off on both sides to the right length, then drill and tap a new hole for the screw under the front sight. Also had to do some dremelling on the rear of the sight, for it to mesh properly with the lower handguard retainer.

With all the people enjoying this project, who will send me some donations via EMT so I can build an RPK ;)

Crunchmeister April 22nd, 2008 09:12

I always enjoy seeing pics of your AKs. That 'Rusty' sure is a kickass looking little gun though. That genuinely looks like a piece that's been used in battle for the last 30 years.

Coma April 22nd, 2008 09:20

How did this go so long without me seeing it?! Beautiful AKM Ancorp (or can we call you Sasha now?), and 'Rusty' turned out well too. Normally I'd turn up my nose at most any Krink, but this one actually looks good.

ancorp April 22nd, 2008 21:45

Haha, thanks guys.

I'm surprised you didn't comment about how AEGs should earn their own wear, Coma ;) It's true, but I had to have ONE beatup AK in the house, so here we are.

Шурик is fine.

Qlong April 22nd, 2008 22:00

Any one can take a bunch of different parts and slap it onto a gun, but what you did takes some mad skill.

ancorp May 29th, 2008 23:13

Thought I'd bring this thread up from the dead.

FINALLY found my camera charger, several weeks after I came back from vacation.

Made abit of progress on the AKM, ready for Humanity's Hammer (almost).

It's a crappy flash pic I snapped up in the dark. Just thought I'd give this thread an update of some sort. Open the high resolution copy of the picture to see the detail.

Thus - pistol grip dyed to a dark brown/slightly plum color (still working on the final finish of it with clearcoat/polishing/etc). Wore the wood a little to match the bluing. Converted a 40 round real steel Romanian RPK mag to a 150 round airsoft midcap :P

High Res HERE

The blue tape is temporary, and will hopefully be fixed tomorrow.

Comments and suggestions are always welcome.

Cheers,
Alex

Wilson May 30th, 2008 22:47

Every time I look in one of your threads it makes me want an AK.

It's your old PBS-1 (appearantly), you tell me.

666 June 1st, 2008 23:54

IIRC it's one of custom made PBS silencers I had made for me years ago.

ancorp June 2nd, 2008 10:39

Hmm I was told it came from Freedom Fighter, to Coltfarmer, to Coma, and then to me.

Vlad,
Any tips as to how to unscrew the damn thing? I think it may have paint down in it's threads. I was thinking of making a tracer unit.

ColtFarmer June 2nd, 2008 11:24

I thought I recognized it! But I didnt remember selling it to you.

You can unscrew it, but the threads were unfinished to its just INCREDIBLY tight.

I recommend getting it in a vise and jut taking it real slow. then you can burnish the threads and make it go on a little easier.

Also, you might try to get an older tracer unit as the new one probably wont fit in there.

Coma June 2nd, 2008 12:16

Isn't it fun tracking your old airsoft bits and bobs? :-p

Looking good Ancorp. Nice find on the RS 40-rounder, looks great. Whats with the blue tape?

ancorp June 2nd, 2008 12:30

The tape was because the top screw stripped in the stock. It was repaired the next day for the game, no tape, solid as a rock.

NOW the AK is in pieces, and the mechbox in a ziplock bag. Also I broke the ICS bolt. And lost a couple screws. Major reconstruction will be done soon, once I fix up this now dead gearbox. What a bitch to have your AK die right in the heat of the game.

pawscal June 2nd, 2008 13:00

Dam are those ICS bolts really that cheap?

also whats your solution for striped stock screw? Epoxy the hole, redill, rescrew, PROFIT?

ancorp June 2nd, 2008 13:23

I think it was the sheer weight of my AKM that helped the bolt handle snap off. It lasted at least 1000 or 2000 "racks" nicely, it's quite durable. But that fall ended it.

The wood was too thin, more was added, redrilled, rescrewed.

Profit.

Amos June 2nd, 2008 13:47

Oh boy... Sounds like quite the headache...

If you want I could attempt to visually fix the ICS bolt... You most likely couldn't cock it hard anymore... but it's an airsoft gun. you shouldn't be cocking it unless you are adjusting the hop.
