Is it can be donation tiem now plees?

http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/2...timead7jp7.jpg

Just wondering, since this site must have insane traffic, how financially stable is ASC?

Way back when, in 2005, there was a donation campaign. I'd like to think a lot of capital was secured, but is it enough to keep this site we all love running?

The total absence of sponsors on this site is kind of worrying me...

So what say ye?

Yes, I miss my silver member tag.

Given the volume and diversity of the traffic here (I know from the logs of images I post served off my server, with a thread from ASC as the referrer) even something simple and unintrusive like Google AdSense could generate a fair bit of revenue; ASC has the kind of traffic a lot of people try to whip up (and can only dream of) to generate money from AdSense.

And never mind stuff like arbitrage strategies to try and generate more "new traffic", ASC already shows up with top rankings for almost anything airsoft related, and quite a few things that aren't.

surebet February 3rd, 2008 09:37

Personnally I'd prefer to drop a twenty in the donation pool than to have to deal with ads, but that's just me.

Maybe we could do like in the SA forums, where one can pay to change another user's avatar and title... Oh, exploitable!

Gee, 110 views and only one reply... though crowd! :)

diamond_SEA February 3rd, 2008 10:37

Sounds like an good idea, id be willing to EMT a few bucks to improve the site.

lykurgus February 3rd, 2008 12:13

i would also throw a twenty into something 'officially ASC', to help support a resource i use so frequently, and through which i recieve much knowledge and entertainment...

but i have no use for advertising,, at all period,, id like to see an end to it in general... not likely i know, but as far as ASC goes lets keep non-airsoft adds out.

The Saint February 3rd, 2008 12:18

I figure if money was an issue, someone would've asked already. I find the lack of updates far more worrying, as it's more complicated to accept donations of time.

Ghillie973 February 3rd, 2008 12:24

Hey yea, I just realized all the gold/silver bars are gone. I got one so I could look cool and all, then you take them down. I feel scammed. ;)

Maybe if funds are needed, and ads are the way, maybe contact Redwolf or WGC.

Armyissue February 3rd, 2008 12:44

yup but this time I want better colors! I was Platinum last time.
This time we should have 'Puss' 'puke' & 'Da Shit!'
come on surebet banner time!

surebet February 3rd, 2008 12:59

I was tempted to do a Goatse colored banner per your request, but I have enough infractions as it is... :)

TokyoSeven February 3rd, 2008 13:27

Ive seen things that make goatse look like a sunny afternoon picnic.

The internets are an awesome yet terrible place.

surebet February 3rd, 2008 14:21

What has been seen cannot be unseen apparently...

BBS February 23rd, 2008 20:28

i thought it was pretty cool to see people with different membership levels and have their own little webspace, if they donated to ASC. I asked Hojo about the donation process a few years back and he said the donation system would be taken down promptly. I forgot exactly what he said but i think it was because ASC has enough money already?

ValkXB70 February 24th, 2008 09:38

Not sure how practical it would be but since ASC is a major buying/selling marketplace a percentage (1-2%) of all sales should be claimed by ASC.

BBS February 24th, 2008 16:39

thats not a bad idea at all; although i'm sure many of us would like to have the donation system back so we can get "special" tags haha.

Apoc_ February 25th, 2008 11:06

G'day,

The catch to a percentage fee would be financial involvement in what is at best a quasi-legal selling system. If/when the proverbial shit hits the fan, ASC goes down with everyone who bought/sold here.

Sales tax? What are you Liberal?

HGI February 25th, 2008 12:37

Them's fighting words....lol

I was thinking more along the lines of a finder's fee...

That'd be so hard to inforce though... Sales are done through paypal and EMT... and cash... Doing that will just add another step to the transactions..

I say if they need money, a donation system is the best bet.

MMMiles! February 25th, 2008 20:47

Thanks for the support guys. Sometime in the near future I will be changing the hosting relationship here, to reduce costs. I'll have a better idea of what the financial future of ASC is at that point - thanks for bringing up the ideas though, ever since we closed ASCA it's been running on savings, basically, and I should do something about it.

surebet July 8th, 2008 21:17

*cough*

Nik12 July 8th, 2008 21:26

I'd toss $20 in for a snazzy Silver Member bar. Not sure if I'd use the space or not though (maybe).

PaCHeKo! July 8th, 2008 21:48

Maybe we should give 20$ each so ASC can buy a container in HK so we can bring a shitload of AEG and GBB :) *dreaming*

ColtFarmer July 9th, 2008 00:20

I also wish to contribute, and would use the webspace to set up games.

Trayne wr3ck July 11th, 2008 14:11

Might as well throw in my two cents

Another board i am a member on ran into financial trouble and they turned to adsense. To be perfectly honest it hasn't made much of a difference at all. They did it in a very unobtrusive fashion and it hasn't degraded the quality of the site at all. They used adsense for about a year and then moved on to other forms of revenue. They now get retailers to pay for ad space and again it works very well.
The site

Jayhad July 11th, 2008 16:41

I would be happy to support this website, but before doing so I would like to see tighter under 18 year old features

Drake July 16th, 2008 04:52

I still think AdSense or something similarly unintrusive would generate good revenue given the volume and diversity of the traffic here: this could easily be combined with a user donation system to remove ads for those who still wish to contribute and/or don't want to see ads.

At least with advertising everyone is contributing some form of revenue, in one way or another. No free rides, more fairness for all.

I don't know all the stats from ASC (including operating costs) but I'd hazard an educated guess it could generate $50-100/day in revenue, possibly more (guessing from stats from my own server, hosting pics etc which I posted here).

It could potentially not only pay for hosting and related expenses, but also for some form of compensation for staff and/or occasional draws etc.

8skippy40 July 16th, 2008 12:16

id be down with shooting them 20 dollars.

surebet July 16th, 2008 12:21

For that specific amount I would recommend you contact Threadstone, he can arrange wonderfull things for you...

Problem I see with Adsense et al is that american/asian/other airsoft retailers will often come up, so we'd shoot ourselves in the foot when it would come to try and educate noobs not to buy from sites advertised on this site.

Oh, and we'd also get ads from buyairsoft *shudder*

AdSense can filter/block specific ads from being displayed on a page. Ultimately even anything airsoft-related could blocked.

And we have some international visitors, and if I'm not mistaken AdSense can deliver (or block) certain ads based on geographic location. So visitors from the US could see an Airsplat ad, but we [Canadians] wouldn't.

As for buyairsoft, if they want to pay to advertise their massive inventory of out of stock items.... :P

surebet August 6th, 2008 14:30

IIRC the same problem creep up with the EVE Online site I visit. Farmers selling ISK for IRL money advertise their wares through adsense, and the sites that had these ads up could only block N number of ads a day/week/month.

I don't think you can manage completly the ads.

Also, quick side note on the recent database errors we are having. I'm used to seing a ratio of about 1:10 registered members to guests. Right now we have 35 registered members for 2358 guests online.

Is the site even capable of handling this load? I'm thinking this is the source of the db errors that keep coming up these days.

Also, I would like to know if the link in the original thread still points towards ASC's piggy bank or not.

Hojo?

Update?

ASC is like crack, and I'm due to pay my crack dealer. What gives? do you guys not want my money?

Kuro_Neko September 30th, 2008 01:40

I would happily chip in to keep the site running. Surebet had a good idea too, buy more PM space.
