M15A4 firing issue (possibly gears)

Sorry to be so vague about my post but i have no clue what im doing, I would remove the mechbox but i dont even know how to get the fucking body pins out. So heres whats up, at the end of our last game, the AEG started to sound funny, like something was off. I was told to tighten the motor tension screw slightly. Seemed to work.

Today i got some new parts (external) so i put them on the body, and went to go zero my optics. The AEG sounded funny again so slightly adjusted the screw again. Went on firing and adjusting the optics when the gun made a sick crack/pop noise. Uhh oh, I fired again to see what was up. Seemed fine. Tried again and then it started...

SYMPTOMS___________

- Spring and piston no longer contract/expand
- Fire Selector will no longer move to single or auto (very little movement from safe)
-Motor Gears are in one piece.
-no visible metal shavings.
-Battery fully charged and functional.
-connections are fine.
- STAGE 1 SOUND: As soon as the incident occured, the AEG made a sick whine, as if stepping on a cat. "RIIIIIAAIAAARRRR!"
- STAGE 2 SOUND: After loosening the Retention screw, and removing the motor and inspecting for damage, the gun seems jammed. It simply attempts a cycle. "whir" on every trigger pull.

Im gonna guess and say that the gears are jammed by something blocking the trigger group. What i dont know. I have a gun doctor but id like to order new mechbox parts. What if any suggestions do i need to get for parts? Or any other Diagnosis?

m15a4master May 30th, 2007 15:18

sucks

that happened to me check to see if the shims are displaced check the back of the gears to see if a shim is there

m15a4master May 30th, 2007 15:18

sucks

go to an airsoft mechanic

Amazing KG3 May 30th, 2007 15:40

HA HA

yeah, well i will but there expensive, so id like to have a general idea to save some time.

Denis[teamplayer] May 30th, 2007 15:43

I suggest finding that m4 takedown guide, this would be a nice opportunity for you to learn how to get that mechbox apart, mechbox.com can help you with the internals. So you can do your own repairs/upgrades in the future!

Amazing KG3 May 30th, 2007 16:00

Im scared....

V2 mech video:

You can do it. Be patient and remember, the money you saved on a mechanic can now be spent on parts, hehe

So will it make any difference on the fact that this is a 7mm CA mechbox? It might be mounted different?

7mm is just the bushing diameter, take down of the mechbox is the same as any other armalite. :)

its easy if you pay attention to the video and keep a part take down picture handy. if you find a guide to show you how to get your mech box out that is even better.

just think logicly when you do it.

i did all my upgrades (including hylical gears) and fired over 3000+ rounds on them just fine. i constantly switch spings so i get the oppertunity to check wear on the parts though.

Amazing KG3 May 31st, 2007 21:31

im still trying to figure out how to get the receivers apart.

Jimski May 31st, 2007 21:46

good, you are progressively bonding with the machine.

Amazing KG3 May 31st, 2007 22:06

Ughhhhh. See i have a rule, dont let friends or myself work on stuff, cause if they/me fuck it up, i cant chew them out. Ill keep at this.

Id rather it be someone i can shoot than it be a friend. Than i loose my woman and friend, instead of a women and some grease ball.

YOU FAIL

but i will prevail

Amazing KG3 June 1st, 2007 00:24

also if you have any idea of whats going on other than convincing me to attempt to fuck up my gun please-share.

i never said anything about getting your friend to do her... lol. in that case spit roast!

but uh no, i lack experience with bad gun noises. i don't even know what that screw on the bottom does.

but by the sounds of your problem your mech box probably has to come out anyway. that's the easy part. you may be able to see whats up if you take it out and look in it without taking it apart.

Amazing KG3 June 4th, 2007 20:56

Okay im really studying how mechboxes work, im actually getting a hardon for this stuff. This is an idea i had while chattign with my doc

Amazing KG3 says:
DOOD
Amazing KG3 says:
Gear Axel
Tristan says:
ya that could be fucked
Amazing KG3 says:
i think by pushing the motor to deep into the mechbox its offest the gears so that either the axel snapped or bushing came out and is obstructing the selctor
Tristan says:
exactl
Tristan says:
y
Amazing KG3 says:
also explains why it would whir, and no why it is jammed
Tristan says:
now you are thnking
Amazing KG3 says:
: D
Amazing KG3 says:
w00t
Tristan says:
but it could just be bent
Amazing KG3 says:
ill still replace it
Tristan says:
in any case new gears is the most likely part you will need
Tristan says:
well ya

Worse case scenario, cracked mechbox, but i highly doubt that.

ThunderCactus June 4th, 2007 21:19

that sick "whirrrrr" you described sounds to me like the motor is installed too deep. when you put the motor in did you run both red and black wires up the back of the motor, or one on each side? I did this once and the same thing happened (whoops, live and learn!) the wires need to both be run up the back of the pistol grip.
what kind of spring do you have installed?
what brand of gears?
check your air nozzle and see if it looks like its been hacked up

Amazing KG3 June 4th, 2007 22:09

its all stock. And i do think the motor is up there to tight. I can see it being jammed but i know something busted in there. I heard a nasty noise.

Amazing KG3 June 5th, 2007 13:51

Damage report is in, this is what i need

-New gear set
-New Spring (upgrade, not necessary)
-New 7mm busings
-New Bearings (Are these 7mm bushings?)
-New mechbox body pin
-Shims

Do i need CA specific parts? Any guidance would be appreciated.

wKnight June 5th, 2007 14:41

official report:

1x shattered bushing
1x damaged bushing
1x bent mechbox pin
broken teeth on gears

what a mess, the gears were totally siezed. thats what caused the whir sound.... sounded like a duck actually. anyways, any parts should do. only thing that needs to be CA is the mechbox pin.

Nova316 June 5th, 2007 14:54

Any gearset from any company would do :) Depending on if u want to upgrade or not, now would be a good time
And your 7mm bushings/bearings are the same thing i believe since they should be steel, relatively inexpensive
New gearsets sometimes come with shims if not then buy a set which is about 10$

The gears would be the most expensive replacement, everything else should be about 20-30$ unless u get a very expensive spring
But i have no idea where u would get a CA pin, if any M4 pins work just get some KA ones off ehobby they work :)

Amazing KG3 June 5th, 2007 14:57

ive got everything except for that friggin mechbox pin. I am told that CA needs a bigger pin as TM and ICS have smaller diameters. This is oversized, anyone kow if it will fit?

stokes June 5th, 2007 15:01

Those will fit... its just a very snug fit... very secure.

Amazing KG3 June 5th, 2007 15:12

thanks stokes, i just ordered it Xpress, hopefully itll be running soon.

ThunderCactus June 5th, 2007 17:01

I recommend buying mostly systema, and replace your tappet plate while your in there, the CA ones are extremely prone to failure lately.
7mm bearings are good, 7mm bushings would also work as an alternative, its 6mm bearings you need to stay away from.

Amazing KG3 June 5th, 2007 18:19

i went with a Prometheus High speed gear set. Ill replace the tappet plate when i get a 9.6 battery.
