Photoshop Contest - Win 5 Bags of BBs!!!

Well, I am doing a massive BB order this week and the bagging company is giving me the option to print 4 color logo/information on the bags. As you know, the BB Bastards have always just come in a clear bag with a label on it.

I'm not an artist by any stretch and I am a cheap bastard (hey, it keeps the bbs cheap, don't knock it). The graphics skills demonstrated on this board on a daily basis simply blow my mind.... soooooooooooo....

Here is the basic information for the label:

http://www.jaypatterson.com/25.png

READ CAREFULLY !

Final resolution should be 300dpi. Submission should include .20g and .25 versions for both types of bb bags. Printing is done on a white label, 8.8cm x 8.8cm and it IS a CYMK printing process. Sorry about the original dimensions, but it should be easy to scale your artwork up or down.

Submissions should not contain copywritten logos or material I could get sued for reproducing. Be as creative and as humourous as you want. My last batch of BBs went out in Biohazard specimen bags... I was quite pleased with that choice.

What does the winner get out of this? 5 bags of BB Bastard product, shipped free of charge, anywhere you want it. Thats a $75+ retail cost. On top of that you get to point to the bag and say to your buddies "Hey, I designed that bag man..."

DEADLINE EXTENDED!!

I am the sole judge and will choose the winner no later than Sunday March 12th at midnight. I reserve the right to select no winner if there isn't a suitable submission to choose from, but I won't use any submission without declaring a winner.

TFZ-OZ March 8th, 2006 23:37

Sweet - I'm in - off to Photoshop I go....

Greykin March 8th, 2006 23:41

Do you want us to submit something with a transparent background, or just a white background is ok?

A white background is okay but if you intend the white to be transparent, just mention it in your post with your image. Either background design is fine.

Heres my submission (Actually the first graphics submission I've done on this site so far)...

Could change the BB size color, font color, etc.

Left it black and white because black and white is always good.

I was going for a simplistic but professional approach. Can't really make anything flashy for a BB bag with a limitation of 4 colors.

Penguin March 9th, 2006 01:16

i started on this before I even saw the one you posted jay haha. But I took the whole "small business" idea to the next level... making it look as shady as possible.

anyways enough chit and chat. heres a scaled down version (from the 300dpi working copy)

photoshop GO!

You do realize that 4 colors is a full color print right? CMYK... cyan, magenta, yellow, and black... Everything printed in full color uses the CMYK ink base (with the exception of using pantone inks but that's another story).

This is very true, however I do know some places when doing jobs for newspapers and such have solid colours... and they shoot them.. in a true 4 colour + bw fashion when going to press.... non process.

it just hasn't really been specified what kind of run this thing is going through.. but the most common is the 4 colour process.

Read my post again. The BOLD part there sizzle chest.

Manaconda March 9th, 2006 11:38

Yo Blackthorne. While I love your Idea A package design should be able to be made real big and REAL small. Your second design has a Grand Theft Auto feel. I like it alot although I might rethink the position of the body copy. But real cool man. Good luck.

Phrozen: I realy like your design looks real professional. At first I thought the shot to the groin was a little off but I get it now. YOU BASTARD you got my balls!

Psycho: Love the contrast all the info in one short burst. Why wouldn't you purchase these bbs!? They would be so easy to locate on any shelf. The red is understated and therefore so effective. I find that your graphic makes me think of paintball though.

Allstar: GREAT web style design but I think it would be a print houses nightmare. I'm sorry but if this were on a shelf I don't know what it is that you are selling. Again GREAT style!

Well I know you didn't ask but it has been a while since I've been involved in a real design critique. I realy enjoy seeing all the entries and I want to see more.

Cheers

TFZ-OZ March 9th, 2006 11:44

Blackthorne, label with Danger Girl, I'm pretty sure that one has more than 4 colors lol.

Your second label reminds me of that one scene from Platoon lol.

Lisa March 9th, 2006 18:54

With 4 colours you can generate multitudes of other colours. Look at your average ink jet printer, you have 4 colours, Black, Cyan, Yellow and Magenta. with those colours you can make other colours.

Doesn't that basically defeat the purpose of him asking for only 4 colors? That's like using red blue and yellow, and mixing them to create TONS of other ones.

you're right, but I think he's talking about the lower priced printers that don't do CMYK. CMYK have different color "Plates" that print one over top of the other...(image) to make different hues and values and colors and shiny buttons... and ... sorry... got sidetracked there.

Anyway, my point is CMYK printing (from a proper printer, not a home job) is rather expensive. 4 color printing is a cheap alternative to having a black and white label.

That being said...

I vote for Phrozen's entry. :D

Edit: A note on color here. If it is a four color job they are probably spot colors (single colors pulled from the Pantone library) vs. the 4 colors used in a process color job (cyan, magenta, yellow, and black). Process costs more than a couple spot colors. Interested parties can find more here: http://www.pantone.com/products/prod...=683&idArea=12

RE: Colors

I agree with a few opinions here on the color.

It's been a while scince I was in the Ad game, but if I remember correctly, 4 color is different from CMYK in the print process and approach.

4 color is 4 separate passes with 100% saturation. The actual colors are irrelivant. You get a color pallet from the printer, and pick 4 that you need and use them in your artwork. They hit the media (bag, paper whatever) like paint. NO shading or gradients.

CMYK is mixing of the 4 colors to give accurate color reproduction, including gradients shades. Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black are mixed at different percentages to achive more realistic color reproduction.

Of course with DIgital printers these days, who know hat you can get in short run.

Anyone here work at a print house? Am I remembering correctly?

Penguin March 10th, 2006 08:34

4 colour is commonly done with silkscreen, or custom cut plates...

I think people should stop making entries until this is established.. because if it turns out not to be process colour.. almost all of the entries are invalid.

Scarecrow March 10th, 2006 08:46

Here is the scoop folks, its being printed on a white label, 8.8cm x 8.8cm and it IS a CYMK printing process. Sorry about the original dimensions, but it should be easy to scale your artwork up or down. I am dealing with people where english is a second language, so, hence some of the confusion.

So, it IS a color process, no worries Penguin...

P.S. They mentioned that they are 'cutting plates' for this, so it may be as simple as a CYMK lithopress. I have a friend who owned a printshop and she did some work for me over the years on it and its a messy way to print but the results are great.

Akhéron Sombre March 10th, 2006 08:59

Unless the art is ripped off of somewhere, I'd say those are awesome. Yours and dcav's are my favorites so far.

I've been trying one of my own, which is difficult at this point because most good ideas are taken already, but I think a good majority of the submissions so far would be far too busy on an 8.8cm x 8.8cm label.

It ain't over 'til the fat lady sings.

Frankly, my favorite is the Blackthorne's Danger Girl one right now, but, that would only fly if we could get copyright permission (not necessarily out of the question), followed by PhrozeN's and then Penguin's.

With all the effort I am seeing here I've decide to reward second place with 3 bags of BBs and 3rd place with one bag, and the funniest with 1 bag - all free shipping. So don't get disheartened guys and keep working at it. What I've said here gives you a hint as to what appeals to me and there is still plenty of time before the deadline to come up with as many entries as you think might win you one of those places.

I'm a graduate of advertising and design at George Brown But decided to stick to tattooz cuz I'm better at dat. Greykin your design rocks. Nice work it must have taken you forever to draw that out for sure. Boy the competitive spirit is in the air and all the work is being kicked up a notch. So many of these designs are sweet. I wanna see more.

Blackthorm you keep leaving out the web address. Real important that the client can be contacted for future business. It's almost as bad as if you spelled the name wrong. Sorry every one for all the posts.
