Best $500-600 rifle?

Hey guys, so I am looking to upgrade to a bit higher quality of rifle and could use some help. I have decided that I am looking to spend somewhere in the $500-600 range and have somewhat narrowed down my prospects to either a BOLT B4A1 sopmod, a VFC 416, or a VFC Scar-L

I figured I should probably ask around and see if anyone has had experience with 1 or more of these rifles to see what they would recommend. Or if you think there would be something better for my price range I am definitely open to suggestions. I would like to stick to something with standard m4 magazines as I have had several annoying experiences trying to find new decently priced magazines for other rifles (m14/g36) and would appreciate the convenience that comes with m4 magazines.

Thanks!

I'd rate the 416 as on par with the BOLT. The SCAR only slightly less. I've owned multiple VFC M4s and now own a BOLT, as well as worked on multiple VFC Scars and 416.

The main con to the 416 is the motor adjustment screw being threaded into plastic, and your battery options are kind of limited due to the size of the storage tubes in the stock, but you still have the whole buffer tube.
The main con to the BOLT is the stock inner barrel and hopup rubber. The hopup unit as well as everything else is good to go though. Slightly more battery space in the stock, but you lose the whole buffer tube over the 416. Also you are very limited in aftermarket stock options.
The main con to the Scar is the pain in the ass ambi selector system, and the lack of available hop up unit upgrades.

All that said, you should be happy with whatever you choose, as they are all good options. However, if you plan on going for a high ROF setup you best steer clear of the BOLT. It's just not made for that kind build (although I do plan on finding the limit with my own :P).

I can only vouch for the VFC Scar, as a buddy runs one. It's an excellent gun to say the least, though I doubt any of them will let you down.

Aluminum hop-up chamber is available now.
But yes, the ambi setup in VFC's rifles is a pain.
They should have used a single transfer gear like G36s/KingArms' Ambi/ARES' ambi.

Where is the aluminum scar-l hop up sold at?

I work part time at a retailer, and we recently started carrying the BOLT M4. There have been quite a few players who have bought it that end up bringing it back because it drains batteries like nothing else, and it's noticeable enough that people think there must be something wrong with the rifle.

For $500 you can get a really nice VFC M4;

How bad of battery drain are we talking? I've heard that an 11.1v 1100mA lipo will last for about 600 rounds or so

at that price. vfc.

I wouldn't even entertain anything else at the moment if I was looking at an m4 family gun.

Yeah, no.

I confused the VFC SCAR hopup with the MASADA hopup (both proprietary, and both breaking).

I am sure someone will make one soon however...

chaz November 10th, 2013 15:02

VFC for sure. Just picked one up and I am loving it.

SuperHog November 10th, 2013 17:42

It is hard to beat VFC for exterior quality. Do yourself favor and hold both and let you eyes tell you.

Internals are quality as well compared to other stock companies.

Any aeg with a recoil system will use more battery power than one without, just as gbb guns use more gas than non blow back. I'm awaiting delivery of my bolt and will post an update as to how bad the power consumption is (I'll try and see if I can use the same battery in someone else's recoil setup to compare). Even if it's pretty bad, the battery is easy to swap out so I think it will be worth it for the fun-factor!

Wrath144 November 23rd, 2013 16:38

The reason the BOLT drains batteries is because it uses an underpowered motor stock. Get a neo high torque motor in there and efficiency will greatly improve.

Why doesn't anyone ever say REAL SWORD? best bang for buck in that price range.

It's kinda like asking what's the best automobile for half a million dollars. Lots of people are going to say a lot of things.

Ricochet November 23rd, 2013 21:58

King Arms Colt M4A1 with class 1 upgrades, and a box of magazines. That's about that price range.

targetGspot December 1st, 2013 15:49

just got my bolt, haven't had a chance to test the power consumption yet although i have discovered that a half charged 9.6v does not have enough juice to fire(runs my ics mp5 no problem). fully charged 9.6v no problem, 7.4v lipo and 11.1v no problems either(not that i expected one). all of my mags fit, a couple a bit tight but all feed without issue.

Mandalore December 1st, 2013 17:56

I have both a VFC 416 and a VFC SCAR-L. I like the SCAR a lot, but the 416 would be my pick over the two. I'm an HK fanboy and the 416 is better for whatever upgrades you want later on, but initially it will do just fine.

SuperCriollo December 1st, 2013 22:17

Dont forget Socom Gear AEGs. Same awesome VFC quality with Noveske or Daniel Defense trades and rails
