Another newb
 

Hey guys is am really new to the sport. I have not had a game yet. Never played airsoft, played paintball once and that was 20 years ago... I know no one that plays the game either. I just happened to stumble onto an airsoft site in January. Bought a gun without any research. Bad idea! I bought a Lucid LG3. I don't know enough about airsoft guns to review it but can say I have shot about 1000 BB's through it and no issues. But from what I have read I probably way over paid for it...

I then did more research and found my fav gun which is the kwa mp7. The only thing with this gun is that accessories for it are expensive. A clip is over 50 dollars. I bought it cause it is my fav gun and don't want to pay 700 for the electric version.

This is what I am thinking, my next gun on my wanted list is a g&p m4. Should I get an m4 and get an extra mag or 2 or stick with the mp7 and I think I would need 4 extra mags as they hold 40 rounds... So we're talking around 250 all said and done were I think m4 mags are 12 dollars. Dang what do I do!!! I really want the m4, and if I get the mp7 stuff that kill the m4 for a long while for me...

P.S. I have no other gear to play. I know I won't be playing till late in the summer. My closest field would be flag raiders.

Kind of kicking myself for finding this sport so late, I am 40. What ages do you find people play at? Or would I be the oldest. LOL

No worries on the age Im 43 but most airsofter's in my area are younger.

G&P M4 are nice gun's but you need to learn how to repair and maintenance it.
This web site has a tone of INFO you just need to do a lot of reading.

Before you jump in head first you should go to a few game's and ask a few questions and see first hand the gun's and if you ask nice some may let you handle some then make your decision if this is the sport for you.

I am 37, and most the player around me are in the same age group.
Since you wont play before late summer, no need to rush to get stuff.

Naw man, 40's still young enough "). Yan101 is correct about the classifieds. Get Age Verified and stalk the For Sale threads as there are some really great deals out there. Don't let the start-up cost phase you, after you get your initial kit the runing cost is very low.

I started in a similar situation... I was 34, had no experience with airsoft, didn't know anybody who did, found out about it accidently and wish I had bought a different first gun.

IMO you should get an AEG rifle (like the M4) and make it your outdoor/milsim primary, while using the MP7 as your indoor/CQB primary and if you like as your outdoor/milsim secondary.

This is how I have organized my gear, my KWA MP7 (also my favourite gun) is mainly, but not exclusively, for CQB/indoor games.
Why? First the MP7 mags, like all other GBB mags, cost a fortune, but since I like picking my shots (as opposed to randomly firing away) I find that I don't go through too many bbs, so I do not need that many mags.
Second while it has decent range for outdoor CQB skirmish (I have been told) it cannot compete with rifles over long distances. So I keep it indoors, but I am thinking of using it as a secondary during outdoor milsims.

As long as your MP7 is at or below 350 fps you got a solid indoor/CQB weapon and besides mags you will not need anything else for it. Oh you should change the hop up unit on it but that's it for necessary upgrades as far as I am aware.

Now that you have your indoor gun you should IMO get and outdoor AEG rifle, like the G&P M4 (I have a CYMA AKM), wich can be used as your primary for outdoor/milsim games.
Why? First, it is an AEG and therefore the mags are not pricey and it can hold a lot of ammo (I like mid-caps and low caps, and dislike hi-caps). I have been told that during milsims I might be in situations where I have to defend against waves of attacks and having an AEG rifle makes sense because its mags hold more ammo and I can afford plenty of AEG mags.
Second, an AEG rifle has a longer range than the MP7 and that is handy when outdoors.

Having a indoor/CQB gun and a different outdoor/milsim gun is just my opinion and there lots of people on these forums that are much more knowledgeable than I am regarding airsoft.

In the west it seems younger guys are the norm but out east there is a trend towards middle aged guys at least from what I've observed. The guys I play with range from about 20 to 40-ish.

Remember this; your first gun isn't your last. You can always get more later, for now focus on getting the cool gear to make you look cool on the field (or you know the minimum PPE to let you play, then worry about looking cool later).

BTW; there's nothing wrong with the "Lucid LG3" it's just overpriced. Just like a Harley, there's nothing wrong with it if you like it (and hey, I kind of want to tour around on a Road King when I'm 30-35) but you're overpaying when you can get the same from a Boulevard or Phantom or whatever.

Also, speaking about the G&P. They're nice and I own one but make sure you get it to a guntech as soon as possible to reshim/replace gears (highly recommend to get Airsoftstore.ca's Core/SHS gearset, or the Lonex gearset) as a preventative maintenance thing. Don't get me wrong it's a nice gun otherwise I wouldn't have kept mine but I think their engineers are retarded or drunk or something because the stock gears always seem to strip (and that's the biggest complaint about them) and that's really the only weak point about them, everything else was designed solidly.

mzo, have you ever tried duster gas in your mp7? I looked how to use it on YouTube and came up empty... I bought a 6 pack of air from Costco for like 20 dollars. I assume this will work. I also know that every 3rd mag or so should be propane with the lub in it. But to get the fps down would duster gas work?

Propane is cheapest route, contact Dynamo for the flute valve, easiest and cheapest way to drop your fps to cqb levels

Dangerwerx makes the same valve that is commercially available but they want atlest $20s

The reason the mags are expensive is because its a gas gun the mags have alot of parts and have to be sturdy meatal to hold up under pressure.
The aeg version is expensive because all the parts are inside the gun.
A good gas gun tends to be about the same price or cheaper then a good electric gun but the mags are expensive. Gas guns are seccond to none for realisim but electric is reliable and more consistant. The mp7 is great for indoors but youll want a rifle for outdoors.
Welcome to ASC "old timer" im in my mid 30's lotta guys in the 30 to 50 age range play mostly 25-35 for the most part and now the recent influx of 28-25yo but if you get out to a few games (there will be one on the 28th right near you at finch field. In rockwood)
Someone can rent or loan you an aeg (the field rents em) just post up and let em know you need one. Its a great field and alot of seasond players will be there you can get to know some of us and find the group of "old guys" to play with lol

Almost everywhere has told me that the internals are garbage on the g&p guns. Just curious what does it cost usually to re-gear a gun? How long do the stock internals usually last?

Come out to a game at Flag Raiders, the field is small enough, you can give your Lucid gun a try too. Post up in the games and events thread and Zeon will come out and AV you.

G&P internals aren't garbage, but to have them run really well they'll need some work. If you want something that will be solid and newbie friendly I'd suggest VFC.

I'd recommend you start off with electric guns, and move on to gas after if that's what you desire. Gas guns are more expensive to run, less consistent and generally require more care.

Depends on what brand gear set you buy. You can go anywhere from $30-$130.

It's hard to say "how long" internals will last. Most stock guns should last you a couple seasons providing you don't use a monster battery. There are things that you can do to increase the longevity e.g. re-grease/shim the mechbox, correct the angle of engagement of the sector gear. A re-shim is recommended for G&P gears based on their reputation for the posts breaking off. I have a G&P M4 and I wouldn't say the internals are bad. VFC is another good brand to look into if you're concerned.

Kind of funny how I got into this... I work from home sometimes... My son had a clear soft laying around, so being bored I took it in the office and built a makeshift target. Fire - reload, fire - reload.... I thought there has to be a better way... So to google I went. I found he place where I got my LG3. Never looked further and got it...

I have always been a fan of guns. When I was younger I owned some real ones. I think these are better cause I can shoot them in the house. Well the aeg ones. Shot my mp7 propane... Don't smell so good.

So next question. Now that I have both an aeg and gbb. What general maintenance do they need? Like do they have parts that require any oil or anything?

Keep the barrel clean. Add silicone oil to the propane valve befor you screw on the adapter (if you got the airsoft innovation one it came with instructions and oil if no get light weight silicone rc shock oil from a hobby shop or the oil from airsoft innovations. Add a drop or two every 5 or 10 mags))
Not fully familiar with the mp7 but when you tear it down you will sed the contact points. Prolly alrdy have lube on them. Lotta folks use super lube. I usd madbull gearbox grease with teflon

Sidearms are plentiful, generally in the form of pistols and sometimes small smgs (like your MP7). They are not actually used (read drawn) that often, but a lot of people carry them.

Sidearm isnt really needed. Its not a bad thing to have but you will only really need it if your primary goes down (ie totally out of ammo or dead battery)
Your mp7 is small enough to fit in some holsters. And there are some holsters for it on the market but you dont really need a sidearm unless your a sniper.
Canadian tire has the crossman c11 (i think thats what its called) its a co2 non blowback that is a good cheap sidearm (one of the few good clearsoft guns) or you can browse around for a gbb if you really want a sidearm but id invest in a good primary and extra mags befor a pistol (unless you got a big budget then go nuts lol)

AEG's require less maintenance than gas. I generally play 3 times a month. I try to clean my barrel after every game and I usually open up and clean/re-lube my gearbox once mid season and again near or at the end. Some guys do it once a season, some don't touch theirs till something breaks, and some guys may do it more often. I try to clean/re-lube my pistols after every 2 or 3 of uses.

I don't use my pistol very often in outdoor games, I really only use it if my primary goes down for whatever reason. Pistols generally don't have the range or volume to compete with an AEG so your tactics have to be altered. I don't always carry my pistol outdoors. My pistol gets 90% of it's use indoors where it can be used as a primary at certain venues or where the engagement distances are short enough to make a transition more favourable to a reload. I wouldn't say a pistol is by any means necessary, but it's nice to have something if your primary shits the bed.

I didn't know anyone either when I started out at 32. It doesn't take long to get to know people, it's a pretty small community so you'll see a lot of the same guys all over. Best thing to do is ask about people's guns and gear, most guys love to show their kit off. My first AEG was a clear gun with plastic gears from Walmart :D . I'm just glad I was able to return it a few days later and get my money back.

I am more af a pistol guy, so I use my riffle but first chance I have I use put out my side weapon.
If I decide to get a support weapon it may change my game...

My first ''kill'' on the field was with a 15$ crappy springer from wallmarde.

It's all about what you want to do

I found that when playing indoor (e.g. Ultimate Airsoft) that when I entered '"maze" like areas it was much easier for me to maneuver and acquire my target using a pistol compared to my MP5 (before I had my MP7).
However if you are using an MP7 you will most likely not need a pistol to better maneuver tight spaces, though it would be nice to have a back up in case your primary goes down or you run out of ammo for your primary.

Still not sure if I am going to get the M4 or a side arm, if I go for a side arm... I really like the P226/229 style. Is there a brand to watch out for? I have found several that I really like, I wish I could post links but don't want to break any rules.

I see a TM-GBB-G26 that I really like but have concerns that in a holster it might be hard to get out if you need it as it looks like a small grip on it. Also a TM-DESERT WARRIOR 4.3 GBB really seems cool, holy cow... I am going to have to get a second job for this...

Also, is it possible to shoot GBB guns in the house without it reaking of Propane?

Are you using regular coleman propane? Green gas should do well with less smell but more money.

Use your paintball mask and LG3 and play at your field for awhile and see your play style. Since I'm a VFC fanboy, I'd say get one of those. They're all good right out of the box. Although you can never go wrong with an MP7!
