DIY BB catcher/plinker thinga-ma-jig
 

Hey guys,

So the wife is tired of of stepping on bb's and I am looking to take a few less ricochets from shooting my pistol in my basement. I am going to make my own bb catcher cage type thing as I am fairly handy building stuff.

Just wondering if any of you have made one and have any thoughts/ideas/pictures of any type of thing before I start.

Dimensions will probably be about 2ft X 2ft. I am thinking the best thing to put inside of the cage would be just plain clothing material bunched up as it would easily catch the bb's and not make any noise. Maybe just use clips on the frame to hold paper targets? What would you make it from or how would you do it if you have or would be making one?!

There are lots of DIY ones that people have made on here. They range from as simple as a cardboard box with lots of crumpled paper. And can be as fancy as a custom wood box with clay on the inside to adsorb the energy from the BBs.

I forget who it was, but someone on here made a nice fancy wooden one like that and used a clip board with a square cut in it to hold targets.

Yep thats the one I was taking about. I keep meaning to make one like that but my good ol cardboard box is still kicking.

I was using a large coffee can with single coragated cardboard rolled up in it. It kept 99% of the bb's that hit it. Could probably do the same with a bucket or garbage can to make larger target

down and dirty..

Cardboard box.. + phone book ( who uses these things anyway)

+ a couple of layers of cardboard over the phone book

last piece of cardboard.. 2 inches bigger than the box.. fold the edges in.. and stuff it in the box.. this will hold all the BBs inside the target.

Stand the box up.. and shoot!

Right on! I was thinking of making a wooden frame one but I do like the $0 idea better! The 5min time is kinda nice too!

I work in a box plant the possibilities are endless.

I went with that method. and covered it with a heavy fabric, the putty absorbs the impact, protects the fabric and last's longer since they do not burry in :)

Make sure you're wearing eye protection though, if you hit the frame, that BB is coming straight back at you.

Quick and Dirty using stuff left over after making the wife a new kitchen (literally converted a small room into a kitchen and the base cabinets were made by yours truly, didn't buy pre-made ones).

a little less then half a sheet of plywood, a 2 foot piece of 2x4, and some 1x2 I had left over plus a can of Krylon I had ...

Yes I used a couple of screws with paper clips to hold the target down, and that plastic peg at the top center is the cap off the syring I use for blowing up worms while trout fishing.

Took 30 minutes with my handheld jig saw and a few screws (plus paint time). With scrap material (maybe $20 if you bought it from Home Depot just for this).

If you hang heavy fabric (I use a sheet of fleece) about 2 inches in front of the back of your box instead of attached to the back, be it cardboard or wood, then you don't need clay or anything to absorb the energy. Only attach the fabric at the top so it can move. The BB's hit the fabric, dissipate energy rapidly, and then just fall to the bottom of the box. You can do it with an old blanket, etc.

I also put a small angled piece of cardboard at the front of the box bottom so it slopes to the front. Then a small hole in the corner lets the BB's drain down into a bucket for disposal.

Much thanks all great ideas! Using a piece of fabric to absorb the bb is what i shoot at when i use my chrono. This works very well and is near silent. The angled piece on the bottom is a fine idea to collect bb's!

I use an old blanket on the wall. It stops the bb's well and a quick shopvac and the bb's are gone.

I've been thinking of something I've wanted to build for a little while now.

After watching the magpul videos and then running around the house clearing room to room, pretending to be Costa :o. I though how cool would it be if I could hear the ring of steel when bb's hit on target, without sending them right back at me.

please forgive my ms paint skills, it is rough sketch and not to scale, its just mean to illustrate my idea which is not my own but an amalgam of other things I've seen done.

the goal is to be light, portable, adjustable, catches bbs with no ricochets and ring like "real steel":rolleyes:. I would like to make three or four and set them up shoot house style.

The only problem with your design is if you don't shoot directly at the front of it. Otherwise you're going to get nasty ricochets that could come out of the enclosure.

Yup, unless he uses thicker paper in front like the targets I'm using, they'll deflect the BBs inwards if they try coming out due to a ricochet.

maybe a layer of cardboard behind the target paper? I was hoping the angle of the rear plate will bounce them down into a fabric and foam catcher of sorts

I think the very best idea to avoid any ricochets coming back from inside the box is what some had said and that is using an old blanket or thick towel and draping it from top to bottom about 2-3 inches from the rear of the enclosure. The material will absorb the bb and fall right to the bottom, not to mention that it is near silent.
