How to wear a shemagh
Heres a quick guide on how to properly wear a shemagh over your head, found it at an ebay auction so here it is.
Also, a shemagh is prononunced [she-mah] the g is silent  In farsi, the name for a shemagh or a peice of cloth wrapped around your head for non religic purposes is called a Khuffiyah [Khoo-Fi-Yah] http://www.c1k.com/images/misc/sheminst1.jpg STEP 1 Fold the shemagh into a triangle. Wrap it around the back and over the top of your head, with the folded edge across your forehead, making sure that about two-thirds of the material is on your left. The right end ought to be long enough to come to your chest. http://www.c1k.com/images/misc/sheminst2.jpg STEP 2 Use your left hand to pinch the shemagh about 3 or 4 inches from the folded edge and let the edge hang forward http://www.c1k.com/images/misc/sheminst3.jpg STEP 3 Let go of the right end. Using your left hand, hold the edge of the shemagh next to your left cheek and hold it near your left cheekbone. After you do this, use your right hand to pull the left end of the shemagh across your face, over your nose. http://www.c1k.com/images/misc/sheminst4.jpg STEP 4 Continue to wrap the shemagh around your face and head until you get it back over your left shoulder. Grip the right tail and hold it to keep from pulling the shemagh off your head as you wrap. Work your hands down toward the ends as you wrap. http://www.c1k.com/images/misc/sheminst5.jpg STEP 5 Pull the shemagh as tight as needed to feel comfortable. At the end of the process, take both ends and, somewhere near your right temple, tie them in a knot. A square knot will secure the shemagh adequately. Thanks to Korneil, heres another way if you are confused or if the detail on the first one isnt clear. http://img327.imageshack.us/img327/9...wtotie16nj.jpg |
Thank you, I found this very helpful
|
Would you be able to provide a guide, as accurate as the one you just provided, on how to properly tie a turban?
Very well done Conscript, Good to see something productive come out of you. |
Finally!! I don't have to wrap it around my face anymore! I can just do it this way!

Here you have another technique to tie a shemagh. It comes to the same basic thing. Pick which ever you want.
|
Korneil, That one there makes more sense and seem's a lot simpler then the previous one. Thanks. :)

I figured out the t-shirt ninja hood a long time ago. i used do put one of those on, make a wooden sword, and have sword fights with my brothers.
that was alot of fun. (and no, nobody's eye got poked out :innocent: ) |
Questions:
1- Will a shemagh fog your goggles like crazy? 2- How much fabric (measures plz) do you need to make a nice "combat" shemagh (tight, not too long but not too short)? |
Answer:
1 - Depending on how you wear it, it may or may not. If you wear it up to your nose (like in the above pictures) it will fog. Even on colder, or less humid days it has been a problem. However, if you wear it more like a scarf, around your neck, and no higher than your mouth, you won't have any issues with fogging that you wouldn't have had before. 2 - A standard shemagh is 1 metre by 1 metre. If it's good enough for them, I'm sure it's good enough for us. |
Thanks

there we go I think i did it right. I had my goggles on it fog up when I exhaled by cleared when i inhaled. Then again my goggles are ventilated. |
I think you gave me a worm. There's one in one of the pics my norton just blocked it. Its on page one. Or it might be in the trash. I don't know my norton just blocked a worm from a photobucket.

It might have been from some thing in the trash. I got the message when the page was still loading.

I feel like an idiot asking around town for one of these things:
How exactly do you properly pronounce shemagh? |
shmeger
|
Quote:
Maybe if there is a video/sound clip of someone saying it out there. |
She-mag
She as in sheep. Mag as in magazine. That's how I pronounce it. I could be wrong. |
According to this: http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/shemagh
it's more like "shaMAG." |
I speak Arabic, I'm from Iraq.
A more proper spelling would be this: Shmagh There is no "e" after the sh. The whole word is one syllable. You just say shma first, the a being like the a in "barn" or "fart" Then the ending letter is an Arabic letter that doesn't exist in English. I have never been able to teach any non-Arabic person how to actually say it, it is represented in English using the "gh" The closest you can get to it is pronouncing it as a g, though it's still pretty far off. So just say shmag Oh and one more note. This is a good guide for only ONE way to wear it. There are bajillions of ways to wear it. Actually, each country has a specific way or set of ways. Sometimes we even attribute styles to specific people who made them. A better set and more generic set of instructions would be the following: 1) fold it into a triangle 2) put it on your head in any way you want and wrap it however you want (you can just put it on without doing anything if you like) That's it, there's no one way to wear it. |
In Farsi we say Shemagh (Sheh-Magkhh)

Heres a great diagram Syphen made for me awhile back, wear it like a big scarf that u can pull up over ur mouth for additional protection/warmth. Protects the neck full time too.

I thought that one was just common sense. The "bandito"
|
Its so easy, ill make a video for you guys.
Is this the way you want it? The way that you guys are showing is way way harder http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y5/...andedited6.jpg we call it a kafiya |
well i know how to make a hood and a mask all that, im just wondering if theres a way to wear it like a scarf. around the neck

hmmmmm
|
I wear it like I showed in the diagram, it works very well as a scarf around the neck, as well as tucked down under my tac vest for added warmth during winter. If your trying to arrange it like a reg scarf that wraps arround and then dangles down ur body, thats def not what shemagh's are made for ;)
|
no, i figured out how i like it, i just make the mask like in the first example, and pull the hood back and the mask down, works perfect.

Man... the other night, I tied mine just right, and it looked a lot different than the ones I've seen here. It was really tight and close-fitting around the face and mouth, and the eye slit was small and just right. I have no idea how I did it though. It looked sweet! If I remember I'll definately post it here.

i just wear it around my neck sorta like a loose scarf . its too hot around here in the summer time to have your head and neck wrapped up in shit. plus i like to think of it as a british sas thing and not an iraqi terrorist thing cuz being american if people saw me with that on boy oh boy would i be in some shit
http://a661.ac-images.myspacecdn.com...160fcc2b44.jpg ....was bored one day and decided to take a goofy pic so dont ask |

i hate it when the heat does that to my hair...... looks so crappy |
lol... My buddy from zee states told me about kids who wear band patches, and other weird shit like that on their "kit". Or just try to look like tactical emos...
Man... new American airsofters are far cry from Canadian :p |

|
Almost three years later, still no proper way.
Wow. I mean... look at these guys... http://www.windsofchange.net/Iraqi%2...llujah%202.jpg http://cache.daylife.com/imageserve/...07bJf/439x.jpg http://media3.washingtonpost.com/wp-...p30-179997.jpg http://i50.tinypic.com/j67xug.jpg That's pretty tight if we compare it to the « known way » which is NOT tight around the head. |
5 years.....
I find it funny how people continue to post, even though the first instructions work just fine =P
|
I wear my Shemagh in a more rebelious way :) I will not conform to the face wrapping way just yet..
http://thumbnails17.imagebam.com/634...de63410379.gif I'm considering wearing this shemagh with a pair of MARPAT BDUs for my games. |

I have 3 shemags and every time I try to use one at a game, I can't stand it and ditch it in the car.
Too hot, too bulky, get in the way, fog my glasses, fall appart in the branches, mess with my gear. I wonder how people manage to play with one. |
My one is 'net'-like, but will try out morning how hot...
|
The "net" like ones aren't too bad. It's the "real" shemag's that get really hot if worn to cover your face. The way you want to wear it should be fine. Although FOX is right, it might get caught in the branches or your gear.
|
It was rain all the day, but hence a great and stable headgear!!!
Just short brim jungle hat beats it... |
