Recommended BDU?

Alright, I've got my vest already in black, however I want to get more involved with outdoor games and its time to buy a BDU.

Whats recommended out there? multicam? Woodland? Is this just a preference thing?

If possible I would like to use my current vest with the camo, not sure how that will look though since its black.

Thanks

Olive Drab or woodland... makes it look oldish... or OD to look stargateish...

Kokanee September 5th, 2010 19:07

As a new player, you can't go wrong with some surplus US woodland BDU's. They are a staple amoung players and blend in well with most terrain throughout Canada.

You can eBay a set very cheaply, and while you are at it get yourself a set of Desert Tiger stripe. With these two BDU sets, you'll be able to cover 90% of your possible camo requirements. After a little more gaming, you might want to get into some more patterns such as CADPAT and MULTICAM etc.

Cyklops September 7th, 2010 01:09

German flecktarn of British DPM is always a nice choice, as is MARPAT.

Ozone06 September 7th, 2010 01:16

Marpat's nice, Multicam is also very nice, Woodland sometimes has way too much green in it

Eldin September 7th, 2010 01:59

+1 here for cadpat

Don't get ACU if you're playing outdoors, your better wearing a reflective safety vest...
More like I.C.U.

Oh, enough with the ACU bashing; its effectiveness depends on terrain (and weather). Where does the OP live? It might work for him...

I wear a black vest with a black hoodie or long sleeve, and my pants are marpat for the day and digital subdued for the night. Cadpat or marpat is a good fit for forest areas which I'm guessing your field has.

Danke September 7th, 2010 12:24

Here's a good test, go to a local game and see what the folks are wearing and who you can't see when they step into the bush.

Eldin September 7th, 2010 14:59

Alright, alright, ICU isn't bad for every environment.... :D
It stands out like a sore thumb If you're not playing on rocks, in the arctic, in snowy conditions or in urban environments.
And I'm assuming he's playing in a greener, more forested area with more earthy greens and browns...

It does depend on terrain, but I don't recommend it for forested/underbrushed areas...

A similar question came up a couple of weeks ago...here's the reply I posted there. I think it'd be handy for your question...since it has a variety of stuff in it.

(From left to right)

I'm on the left messing around with my gear. DPM bottoms, OD top (looks black 'cause it was a wet one that day).

Technosnob is in the middle facing away...woodland

The guy to his right facing the camera is wearing woodland.

Guy in the back with the red kill-rag...CADPAT

The big dude (Coach) facing away who's stuff basically looks white....is wearing multicam (faded MC is ghey...but Coach is big so I don't say that to his face)

You can't quite see Ancorp...but that's a russian pattern (dunno russian pattern)

Pus is next to him...can't remember what he wore...can quite make it out for sure....but it's pretty faded

Duck was wearing a PCU top...

As you can see...LOTS of different stuff works. As long as you:
1. Stay out of direct light
2. are aware of your surroundings (stay in shadows, don't contrast)
3. don't have stuff so faded that it's going white (then it's ok even still for paintball places that are wide open anyways)

In the pic you can also compare how black gear gets along with coloured BDU's...how mix/match gear looks...etc...

The pic was taken in direct sunlight...note how dark/black the vegetation gets just a couple of feet in from the clearing.

pusangani September 7th, 2010 15:29

I was wearing CADPAT too with CB chest rig, it's issue but really old and faded.

Ninja_En_Short September 7th, 2010 16:06

Given that my Crye set is really expensive and everybody's going to argue over their own prefered pattern just go in a surplus (don't go internet in case it doesn't fit in terms of height and width), look what they have in the Propper (a brand) section and pick the one you like the most.
Also have a look at the Russian and ex-soviet ones, there are some really nice pattern.

But if you have both forest, rocks, mud and dirt, Multicam will probably work well for you.

Grudge September 7th, 2010 16:25

Woodland is a great base set, that's what I have. If you are interested in getting on a team, each has its own BDU pattern. Check with the teams and see what they are using. I know there's at least 5 different patterns, some teams even run two or three different sets just so they can have some flexabiltiy for ops.

Short Round September 7th, 2010 17:30

ACU is badass, love that stuff. It's almost like wearing tan in a wooded area, you pretty much wont blend in

Gridlock September 7th, 2010 17:31

All this talk makes me curious. Would an OD vest work with both woodland and a tan BDU?

Cyklops September 7th, 2010 18:05

Tigerstripe can work very well depending on the environment and its super cool looking....its what im investing in next!

I've worn OD over TW and AR CADPAT, works good. Plus once you get it dirty it all blends into itself and the enviroment more. Coyote Brown is also a good colour for LBE and packs.

scubasteve September 7th, 2010 18:19

Gorka's always a good choice.

Frozen Tex September 8th, 2010 12:00

I'm getting a set of Gorka Autumn and a set of Flora soon... :D

BobbyDangerous September 8th, 2010 16:46

I stand by and will always stand by.. A shrimp ghillie suit.. A complete shrimp covered ghillie suit is your best bet to avoid detection in any circumstance..

I have Multiucam, Marpat woodlands and just Reg woodlands. Also Urban Camo for winter.. My vest and all that are either black or olive drab spray painted in various patters which i did recently..

TheMightyOb September 8th, 2010 18:20

I think I'm going to go for the standard woodland...

thanks all

d3icid3 September 8th, 2010 18:22

Thank you, kind sir...

I look forward to it, along with various chest-rig gear, etc, hats.... all to go with my AKMS and the RPK that just arrived (haven't seen it yet; I'm on vacation!).

KrashRider May 31st, 2011 20:54

What would these be classified as USA or Canada?

what he said!

Mandalore May 31st, 2011 21:29

I went all ACU because I liked the way it looked. Might not have been the best idea, but oh well

Sasha June 13th, 2011 23:36

Greens and browns. And in a pattern that looks at least a bit like the predominant foilage. Oh, and get something that breaks up your outline. I bought a ghillie type helmet cover (this http://shop.ehobbyasia.com/combat-ge...met-cover.html ) a few weeks ago, it makes me look like a retarded clown but I've had a lot of people tell me I basically disappear when I crouch in any kind of undergrowth.

Reckless June 14th, 2011 00:14

the other part with camo... what's your playstyle? ... if you never stop moving and are a crazy person that runs at the enemy and engages every change you get ... camo ain't gonna make much of a difference and wear what you think makes you look cool... if your a stalker, hider, etc (read: not including the campers and stump fuckers... they could be wearing neon yellow it don't matter they won't engage anyways) then your choice is far more involved and you'll probably end up getting multiple sets of camo for parts of the year, different fields you play, etc.

personally around here (van island) Marpat does very well, theres alot of old growth with makes the green up higher, more browns around people height. good surplus woodland works well too... don't be afraid to get your camo dirty either... it'll work better ;)

Armoredshell June 14th, 2011 00:20

Alright dont get wrong but OE is the best, I still own my OE gas mask, belt, magazine pouches, canteen, yes cateen.... and boots.., also the woodland camo jacket, I just purchased new woodland pants (Pooper) no where near the real stuff, although its been awhile, feels cheap, IMO...

All things being said do not ditch the real gear, it allowed you too play today

FreelancerInc June 14th, 2011 00:32

i spent the big money and got multicam mostly due to the fact that everyone on the team i play with runs in and i didn't wanna be the weirdo in the group lol. HOWEVER, if your not a extremly serious player or dont wanna spend money on hard to find and expensive gear i'd suggest something other then multicam. and i only say this for the $$$ factor

Reckless June 20th, 2011 16:33

I had half decent luck with multicam in woodland enviro .. and I used the cheap stuff that was a little bright and faded fast ... I just wore OD and CB over top of it gear wise.. IE : OD vest with CB pouchs, CB leg drop/platforms ..
