AK Optics/Sights?

Hey guys. I currently have a kraken AK with a rail, and a silencer.

I have the exact same rail as pictured here: http://www.socomtactical.net/images/...-mount-top.jpg

I want to pick up a sight/optic for this. I was thinking of a 3-9x40 scope from NCStar, but I'm not sure if that would be the best choice.

I'm looking for a sight such as a Elcan C79, ACOG, or like a EOTech.
Yet, I would love some variable magnification/zoom.

Is there a type of ACOG, Elcan C79, or EOTech with Variable Magnification/Zoom? (I'm unsure of EOTechs have magnification/zoom or not.)

I'm looking to use the AK at medium to medium-far(semi-far) distances. (Once I get it fully "upgraded")

What are your opinions? (Mind you, it needs to be totally practical and usable using the current rail system that I have.)

Danke May 6th, 2010 01:00

I don't think you'll like anything with magnification that far from your eye. It'll have to be some sort of red dot type sight.

AngelusNex May 6th, 2010 07:04

that rail is for red dots, you'd have to bring your face so far up that you'd be using the grip for a stock instead of the stock if you mount magnified optics on that.

Alright thanks guys. :) So, new questions:

1) Should I just get a 1x ACOG or ELCAN or EOTech sight then? (How good would these look on an AK? :P)

2) I've seen 1x clones of EOTechs and ACOGs, but are there companies that make 1x elcans?

EOtechs have no magnification, ever, unless paired with a magnifier, they are a laser holosight.

Trijicon ACOGs are 4x. 1x is only for airsoft... and is retarded due to the small tube.

Aimpoints (Comp ML2, or T-1 Micro) are non magnified, and probably your best bet for an airsoft clone (low / no ghosting, adjustable, relatively water resistant, good visible dot).

Elcans are 4x as well, I've never seen a 1x Elcan, but it'd only be an airsoft thing, these things are rifle scopes... I personally don't like the REAL Elcans (eye relief, massive posts).

Love May 6th, 2010 10:18

Dang. I just really love the look of ELCAN's, but I dont wanna dish out alot of cash for a real 4x one that I wouldn't be able to use well with my current rail.

Hmm.

So you would suggest an aimpoint or an EOTech?

I saw 1x clones of EOTechs, and ACOGs on DealExtreme for cheap. Pretty good reviews.
Yet, I haven't came across a cheap "clone" of an aimpoint yet. Anyone wanna spoonfeed me to a source of them? I'd prefer under $30 or $40, but I doubt that I'll find any for under that. (I swear I saw a cheap aimpoint clone somewhere... maybe dealextreme, ehobby, or ebaybanned. I'll check those now...)

(Do you think an Aimpoint, EOTech or ACOG would look good on an AK?)

I've seen forward mounted EOtechs on AK's, didn't look bad at all but it's really personal preference. Some of the clones, the farther forward you mount them, the bigger the reticle gets. I only experimented with a real sight so I can't say just how bad it gets on a clone.

If you want something lightweight I'd go with an Aimpoint on a low mount for that type of rail. EOtechs stick up higher and it feels "Top heavy" compared to an Aimpoint with a low mount.

Love May 6th, 2010 10:31

Hmm alright. Thanks for the tips. I think I found an aimpoint on ehobby for $30. Gotta see shipping though...

EDIT: $15 to ship it. Eh, I'm a cheap bastard! I'll shop around more. ahah.

Desmodus May 6th, 2010 10:34

In my opinion... Aimpoints and EOTech's will definetly look good.. but stay AWAY from ACOG's! They look awkward as hell on an AK.

I dont think you will find a good quality aimpoint/eotech for under 30-40 dollars, you'll need to expand that budget to get something that'll last.

I recently received a G&P EOTech 552, and its solid as hell, there is practically no ghosting and has all the official markings. I'd highly recommend it.

Love May 6th, 2010 10:46

I've seen the ones on DealExtreme. Theyre clone EOTechs and have pretty decent reviews here on ASC. I like the look of an aimpoint over the look at an EOTech. (EOTech seems to be too boxy compared to the shape of the top of the AK, as the AKs top is rounded. But thats just me.

I love the look of ELCANs the most, but they seem to be all 4x. (and it'd be hard to use with my current rail system.)

If anyone comes across an ELCAN clone that is 1x, let me know.

So, current choices:

EOTech
Aimpoint
Some Magical 1x version of an ELCAN

What do ya'll suggest? (I'll try to find some pics of an AK with an EOTech and aimpoint. Remember, my rail sits in the middle of my AK. The only pics of an EOTech on an AK that I've seen, seem to be located at the front of the gun.)

EDIT: Buyairsoft *shutter* has an aimpoint clone for $20. NVM its a plastic POS. :)

ShelledPants May 6th, 2010 11:09

A hint: If you're cheap, stay away from optics. The difference between the low end and high end clones is a massive jump... and the difference between high end and real is even more.

Do not buy "high end" airsoft optics, you're better off paying the $50-$100 more for a second hand real optic. For instance, high end airsoft Eotechs go for $150-200 new, and a second hand 552 can go for around $350 if you have patience.

Expect to pay around $60-80 for a decent Aimpoint clone.

Don't buy airsoft 4x scopes (magnifiers or tubes...) as they have horrible eye relief and you'll have a hard time using it properly with goggles.

A lot of people will argue with what I have to say "I use a clone Acog and it's awesome..." Yeah, well, odds are they haven't used the real thing and realized how limited the clones are.

You are more likely to get kills with iron sights than a clone 4x optic.

The clone red dots (Aimpoint ML2, T-1 Micro) are actually pretty good for the price. Clone Eotechs suck balls.

Like shelled says here the T-1 Micro is a great package. I've used it on Carbines, PDWs and SMGs. It doesn't eat up much rail, is not that expensive, and doesn't soak up batteries.

The only downsides I see are that in super bright sunlight it's a bit faint, and there isn't a easy to find front cover to save the lens from being shot out.

RacingManiac May 6th, 2010 11:30

open style dot-sight will work as well...clone C-more rail mounted or a rail mounted docter-style sight will work too...
http://i393.photobucket.com/albums/p...0530/ak472.jpg

or
Larue style irondot
http://www.laruetactical.com/pics/la...m/p8260444.jpg

Only available in RS though....

What you really want is a Kobra for your AK though...

Danke May 6th, 2010 11:42

Well then he'll need the side mount to do up the Kobra properly.

Here's a movie with a real T-1. This guy's a real Aimpoint fan.

I dont believe those will fit on the kraken unless you instead the mounting bracket.

No optics will fit a Kraken unless you install some form of mounting hardwear. :\

Disco_Dante May 6th, 2010 12:52

Attaching the scope plate would probably damage the plastic receiver of the Kraken. I wouldn't recommend going that route.

Green May 6th, 2010 13:05

+1 on not having magnification that far away from your face.

Try a more open red dot like the rail mounted doc sight that RM suggested or something like this http://www.airsoftparts.ca/store2/in...oducts_id=1038 can be mounted directly on the rail you have.

It's more open and won't obstruct your field of view.

Love May 6th, 2010 21:47

I hate the look of those types of open red dots, Greenpunk.

I used my freinds on the gun, and just felt that it was too weird for my AK.

I love the look of the kobra, but too bad its not availiable in a rail mountable version...

I'm still stuck deciding. ugh

fleuryfighter May 6th, 2010 21:58

I got one of those tasco red dots at walmart for my kraken and it get the job done

Love May 6th, 2010 22:23

What about this red dot? I've seen these (or one very similar to it) on some AK's.

http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.21959

Its tiny though. Jeez.

Or, instead of a reddot, I should look for some weaver rail iron sights. hahaha

Skruface May 6th, 2010 22:52

Do a search on Google for "AK irondot"...

Love May 6th, 2010 22:55

Yea, Skru. Thats the one I was looking at. Dealextreme has a cheap clone of it. Yet, I'm unsure of the irondot. It seems to be pretty damn small. (Like, small diameter for objective/viewing.)

Rooster May 6th, 2010 23:13

Man that Irondot is not cheap.. $300 for a sight.. maybe for RS but not airsoft.

RacingManiac May 7th, 2010 00:39

http://www.pbase.com/racingmaniac/image/116563944
Irondot...it is small, I'd think the height is about perfect for the sight height of AK though....

A rail mounted docter copy by king arms or something will be close enough...

Love May 7th, 2010 09:07

Dealextreme has one for cheap. Cheap enough that I could buy it, and if I dont like it, sell it for even cheaper. It looks almost identical, it just doesnt come with the plastic shell that goes outside of it or whatever that was ontop of it in the picture you posted, RacingManiac.

Unfortunately, my rail does not line up with my sights.

Its the rail pictured here: http://www.socomtactical.net/images/...-mount-top.jpg

I can actually see the front sight if I look under the rail...

RacingManiac May 7th, 2010 09:56

I thought its actually a railed forearm or something. You might be able to mount magnified optic on that if you mount it far enough back.

The shell(aluminum actually) is what makes it an "irondot", its a Larue mount and protective housing around the normally somewhat flimsy fast-dot sight.

buellxbk May 7th, 2010 10:13

I have been going through the whole "what rail will work" thing with my AK. I tried the one you have pictured above and found although it looked real nice as a scope mount it still was to far forward. I ended up getting one from Eb airsoft that goes from the rear site and attaches to the top mount on the butt stock. Sorry I don't know how to put up a link. I did have to dremel where it attaches to the butt stock because the angle is wrong but not much. The old rear site (the adjustable part) just twists off and this new rail goes in it's place and the top machine screw on the butt mount is replaced with a new longer 4 mm one and its on. If your battery goes up top you just take out the butt screw and the rail will lift up like it is hinged on the rear site. This rail even has it's own iron sites if you want to use them (much like the M4 style peep sites). Hope this is of some help. Really depends on you budget. This rail runs about $60.00 CAN, free shipping from these guys and about a week and a half to get to Ontario.
