90% sure it is a battery. Was reading the forum @ Arnie and someone asked the same question. Someone else posted a pick of a battery with almost identcal dimensions as the blackie in question.

I posted about the Type 89 along with some other TM releases last year. It still says next gun but there no proof of it yet other then some pics of the real thing, just like the M14. So don't expect it until late next year.
