AWG #8 is 0.128" (3.25mm) which is too small to use as a tank gauge. The closest wire guage is 7 at 0.144" (3.66mm), but wires typically are made in even gauges. I'm guessing manufacturers don't really want to bother with tiny increments.

If you wanted to use electrical wire, you'd have to use solid core.

If these new coleman tanks pose an issue, save the old coleman ones and buy one of those fill adaptors... They allow you to fill a 1 lb tank with a larger 20 lb tank...

Just to let everyone know there's a rather cheap, inexpensive and easy fix for the Coleman propane tanks that have the retainer rings pushed in too far. Method with pictures has been published on my blog (http://www.colinsun.com/Colin/nfblog/?p=670) but I'll do a CC here. Click the thumbnails for larger images.

After the screw, nut and washer have been assembled, screw the entire unit into the valve opening. You want to make two full revolutions and here’s tip so you don’t over tighten on the tank. Count the number of corners or slots (for instance you want to count eight corners with a Roberson head) so you don’t over tighten.

After the securing the screw in place, lower the nut so that it’s firmly sitting on top of the washer. Next use a wrench or pliers to turn the nut clockwise till it makes 1/2 a revolution (moves the nut farther from the head), that will raise the retainer ring thus stop it from squeezing the O-ring which in turn gets lets the propane adapter valve move back to its default position.

In the second picture, you can see how the screw grabs on the retainer ring.

Once that’s done you’re set! You’ve just raised the retainer ring which allows the AI propane adapter to function properly again. :)

I got a stupid question...what does everyone do with empty coleman propane bottles? Are they recyclable?

Empty tanks are meant to be disposed. It's a shame as they're a big chunk of steel which recycles well. I think the plants don't like seeing them.

Push on the pin to make sure they're not full and chuck em.

NO....FUCKING....SHIT!!! Drives me freaking nuts having to feed both my small BBQ (yes, am too cheap to pay the $20 for the full tank adaptor, plus the $40+ cost of buying/renting a full sized tank) AND GBBs (ok, my KJW M700 too) with these small tanks, then having to toss them out. No way am I collecting the bastards then driving 20odd kilometers to dispose of them properly, I just throw them out.

What pisses me off the most is seeing that FUCKING FILL VALVE on the upper part of the containers, stupid easy to drop off at CT or wherever, they send it back and it gets filled same as a GBB mag, relabeled and repackaged. Like, why not re-use these things? Put a $2 refund charge on them or something and help us help ourselves cut back on landfill crap.

No kidding, why put a refil valve on something you never intend to refill...

So wait, does this mean i can refill my Propane bottles? If i for example took a BBQ Propane tank. Could i Buy an adaptor and refill my existing small tanks?

Disposable 1lb propane tanks are not designed to accept refill as they do not have overflow features which are present in 25lb BBQ tanks. They are not sufficiently overengineered for USDOT or TC to approve of their repeated use.

Alright, thanks. Tho I think with all the propane bottles asc users in GTA area alone go through, we should propose a recycling system for them.

I just hate to see perfectly recyclable items get thrown in the trash. Its bad enough that our landfills are clusterfucked already :/
