The AN/PEQ you see attached to the rifles Troops are carrying in theatre replaced the larger stand alone units. They perform the same function, are compact enough to attach directly to 20mm rail, and the illumination beam on a AN/PEQ has a range of approx 10miles, so the larger rifle style or the tripod mounted units were basically rendered obsolete.

The blast sims dont use any Pyro, all of that stuff uses either Co2, Nitrogen, or Compressed air and FX powder of some sort.
